The Turkish general Baykbak, the husband of Tulun's widow, was given Egypt as apanage by the Caliph al-Mu`tazz in 254/868. Ahmad ibn Tulun was appointed as Baykbak's lieutenant and entered Fustat on 23 Ramadan 254/15 September 868.
