At beginning of class
- Class schedule has been changed somewhat
- Next Monday’s class, 11/26, provides more time to go through the exercises introduced today
- There’s no longer going to be a new topic introduced on Monday
- There won’t be any reading for Monday, so anyone who was supposed to do a write-up of an additional reading won’t have anything to do—so you need to do a somewhat significant blog post related to one of the topics listed below. This will count as a full substitute (i.e., 2 blogs) for the write-up you were supposed to do. (As always, don’t forget about our class blogging guidelines.)
- Assignment for the last blog entry (which everyone is going to write, no matter how much you might have written in your blog so far): here is the description
- Definite due dates
- All blog entries: Thurs, December 6, 10pm
- Both term project wikis: Sunday, December 9, 10pm
- Be sure that your student information and participation log is filled out and up-to-date
- My “to-dos” over break
- Make up “check list” (not a rubric) for term project wikis to help you wrap up the semester
- Test preparation
- Review questions that have been posted
- Add questions to posted review questions that I think are appropriate
- Grade Search Tool Comparison assignment
- Read blogs
- Yahoo update
- Google update
- Quiz
Discussion structure
- Lots of ways to search music, images, and video
- New ways that are not covered in the book
- Old ways that have disappeared that are in the book (that we aren’t going to worry about)
- Going to get into some depth with podcasts, audio archives, and audio blogs
- Hint: When you read books about fast changing technologies (such as the books that we’re using in this class), you can’t just read them—you have to work through them to verify that what they say is still up-to-date and correct.
- I will not test you on the book’s material if it is no longer correct. I will expect you to know the changes that have occurred (that I have pointed out in my notes on this site).
- I have summarized your responses to my inquiry about searching for multimedia.
- Today I’m going to go over some of the highlights from the chapters
- At the bottom of that page it lists many sites (from the chapters) that are no longer worth worrying about—mostly because they don’t exist or aren’t supported any more
- As usual, to end the day you should go through today’s exercises
- We are going to spend all day on Monday continuing these exercises. I find them to be quite broad in their scope and subtle in their possible uses.

Student Notes
Opening of Class
Remember: Test 11/28
No reading for Monday!
Stop Writing Blogs on December 6th @ 10PM: Last Blog Entry
Stop Writing your Wiki on December 9th @ 10PM
If you missed the link up top, click here to see what our class uses to search for things
When dealing with things that change quickly (i.e. our book) you have to work through them quickly and correct in places it is no longer correct.
Class Notes
Audio
- Google: Cannot search file type for audio
- Yahoo: Can search file type for audio (do a Yahoo audio search >> more options available after your initial search)
Also try Altavista for audio search
Use Information traps like we have seen already (Bloglines, Yahoo! Pipes)….but there are podcast searches available online:
Monitoring Podcasts:
Archives:
- Basic storyline to most of the music sites: Grew fast, crash, re-bought, crash, repeat.
- Audio archive downloads as much as they can off the internet daily – would be a good place to start for information. Also is RSS feed compatible so you can see the newest updates.
Images
“Fickr”: Lots of fun stuff to do here, searchable in both full text or tags
General searches are all very similar, with some differences in how you can search
Google and Yahoo news offer “news photos” after you search a topic. You cannot search for a picture directly when using these engines.
Stock Photography: Nice photography, but they are Paysites and cost $$$
Video
Google Video no longer competes with YouTube because….they purchased them. There are more videos available on Google Video, but “in theory” all youtube videos should be in google video.
Scott couldn’t figure out how to search effectively through “channels”, “groups”, and “playlists” – so if you know how let him know.
Yahoo & AOL Video are both nice as well
Don’t worry about the following: Singing Fish, Ithaki, PodSpider, Podcast Directory, IUMA, SpeechBot, Ljudo, The Earchives, Historical Sound Archives, Interactive TTS Demo
