Planets Unit: Earth's Characteristics

Lesson History
School Franklin Middle School
Class 8th Grade Science
Date(s) October 14, 2003
Learning Objective

My content objective for this lesson was to see how much the students already know about Earth as an astronomical body, as well as to give some basic knowledge to those who didn't already have it.

Besides assessing their pre-knowledge, I wanted to reinforce many things they have already learned: units, unit conversions, what comparisons are valid, and how to change worksheets to allow them to show me their knowledge without being restricted to the structure of the sheet.

Finally, students are introduced to the research form they'll be using so that when they are working on different planets on their own, they will be able to do so with fewer questions.

National Standard(s)
Sci.V.4.MS.1 Compare the earth to other planets and moons in terms of supporting life.
Throughlines
  1. How do structures and processes relate to energy and its use?
  2. How do differences in scale affect processes with which we are familiar?
Driving Question

How does Earth relate to compare to other planets and moons?

as Related to Objective

We need to learn about Earth before we can relate it to other astronomical bodies.

Activity

Instructor Preparation
I created and photocopied the form (one overhead copy as well). I also went through and made sure I could answer the questions myself.

Resource What is it? File(s)
Research Form This is a form with many questions which can be used to compare planets and moons. In addition to the pdf file, I have an editable version in ClarisWorks format.

How it Went/Lessons Learned

This seemed to go very well during class, but students didn't write the answers on their forms!
