Building the Earth
item name: What is density?: The Funny Water Lab  feedback feedback view versions view versions
element type: Generative Topics   framework help
item content: This is a five day sub-unit about density. It comes from my Science Methods Standards book, pp150-3. It is important that the students have a clear understanding of what density is to understand why iron sinks to the center of the Earth and creates the Earth's magnetic field, and why the plates don't sink, and another reason it makes sense for glacier's to be on top of rock.

This sub-unit consisted of several lessons:
  1. Of course I will have a journal as I do for all my sub-units:
    1. Funny Water: Please examine one of the two columns of liquids (they are the same). Take a few minutes to observe them and to talk to your classmates about them before you open your journal. When you are ready, please write down your observations and thoughts about why the liquids separated.

    2. Designing an Experiment: Design an experiment or two to explore why the liquids separated yesterday.

    3. The Effect of Density: What will happen if we drop objects into the graduated cylinders from Monday?

    4. The Effect of Size: What will happen if we drop these objects into the graduated cylinders from Monday?

    5. A Good Lab Report: What is important to include in a report on density?

  2. Demonstration of Liquids of Differing Density

  3. Lab Comparing Liquids of Differing Density

  4. Lab Comparing Objects of Different Densities

  5. Lab Comparing Objects of the Same Density but Different Sizes

  6. and
  7. A Day to Finish Writing the Lab Report.
