Dress-up

Shelly loved do dress up from a very early age. Around age 4 she would pretend to be Sleeping Beauty and Howard, the prince, would wake her up with a kiss. With me she liked to be Little Red Riding Hood, and I would be the Wolf. She also loved to dress-up and dance to different music: Klezmer, Harry Belfonte and James Brown were her favorites. She loved the musical Guys and Dolls, which she saw twice. At home she pretended to be Miss Adalaid : she would wear a fancy dress with long gloves, feathers, scarves and other accessories, and take them off one-by-one as she danced to "Take Back Your Mink", with very expressive movements.

Science Experiments

Shelly loved to make inventions: in the bathtub she would pour soap and shampoo to cups and bottles and experiment with them. Down in the basement she and Howard would busy themselves for hours, building magnets and small machines, and creating electricity. She liked to glue together pieces of broken appliances, to create interesting art projects.

Cooking and Baking

Shelly loved to spend time in the kitchen mixing ingredients, shaping dough, and assembling Pizzas. Anytime there was a job to do, she happily stood on the step-stool by the counter and worked with me or with her Grandma Volk. Holiday cooking was very special: she enjoyed peeling potatoes for "Lapkes" (that's how she called Latkes") and made beautifully shaped Humentaschen for Purim. Her most favorite kitchen activity was, not surprisingly, decorating cakes (while sampling the frosting and candy)... She mixed the (ready-made) frosting with food-coloring, spread it on the cake and decorated with candy...her decorations were gorgeous. Pictured below you can see the cake for her 6th birthday, shaped like a blue butterfly.

Cloths and Jewelry

June 1997
Shelly loved beautiful cloths and jewelry, on herself and others. She always paid attention and complimented people, even complete strangers, on the way they looked. She preferred bright, ornamented clothing, with shiny and sparkling textures, gold and silver. In jewelry she preferred big gem stones, rhimestones, diamonds and pearls, custom and real stuff alike. Pictured to the left is Shelly's most favorite outfit: the strawberry outfit by Esprit. She wore it year-round, with a red turtle neck and red tights in the winter.

Sports
In all honesty, Shelly did not care for sports. She liked being a part of a team and get the T-shirt and hat, but did not like playing sports. T-ball, was not bad -- it is not a physically demanding game, and there are rest periods. The more action-packed game of Soccer, however, was not Shelly's "cup of tea". She did not see the point in running after the ball and much preferred to count the butterflies that were fluttering about the field. She figured that the position of a "goalie" would suit her temperament better , since the goalie stays in one place. The times she spent as a "goalie" were the most stressful to her parents, as we were trying to get her to focus on the game from the sidelines.
