June 17, 1996 INSTRUCTIONS FOR SUBMITTING PAPERS ONLINE Connect to a login server or the confer machine. At the prompt where you would normally type "pine" , do the following: frogger% cd ~rtanter/Public/html/S96PS472_Papers Note: Type the above EXACTLY as it appears. The directory name is case sensitive and "Papers" is not the equivalent of "papers" or "PAPERS" . frogger% pico LASTNAME.FIRSTNAME.COUNTRY LASTNAME & FIRSTNAME should be your last name and first name. COUNTRY should be the county or countries your paper addresses. [Example appears as if you were logged into the confer machine. Type what appears above to the right of "frogger%" ] The editor you use for email and confer (called pico) will load. It will look like you are typing an email message. Cut and paste your essay from Word or whichever word processor you use into the editor. Note: This is exactly the same as if you were posting it as a message onto the confer system. When you are done cutting and pasting the essay, make all necessary changes and then type control-X and pico will ask if you want to save the file. If the editor contains your full essay, type [y]es. Otherwise type [n]o and repeat the above steps. NOTE: You will be unable to edit your paper once it is online. Do not save it unless it appears exactly how you want it to appear. Lastly, when you are done, you can verify that your essay is properly stored in RT's Public directory. Type: more LASTNAME.FIRSTNAME.COUNTRY The filename must by typed EXACTLY (including upper/lowercase matching, case sensitive) as you typed it before. The command "ls" will list the files in the directory and you can also display other students' essays with the "more [filename]" command. When you are finished, type "cd" and finish up your other computer work or logout.
