Jon Mallin December 2, 1996 INSTRUCTIONS FOR SUBMITTING PAPERS ONLINE Connect to a login server. At the prompt where you would normally type "pine" , do the following: frogger% cd ~rtanter/Public/html/F96PS472PAPERS frogger% pico LASTNAME.FIRSTNAME.COUNTRY [672 Students should follow same instructions but substitute F96PS672PAPERS for F96PS472PAPERS.] LASTNAME & FIRSTNAME should be your last name and first name. COUNTRY should be the county or countries your paper addresses. [Example appears as if you were logged into the frogger machine. Type what appears above to the right of "frogger%" ] For sake of consistency, please use all capital letters for the file name. The editor you use for email and confer (called pico) will load. It will look like you are typing an email message. Cut and paste your essay from Word or whichever word processor you use into the editor. YOU MAY NEED TO CUT AND PASTE A COUPLE PAGES AT A TIME. Whether you need to cut and paste small sections of the paper into the editor will depend on the program you are using to connect to the the login server and the type of connection to the internet. Also, FOOTNOTES WILL NOT TRANSFER PROPERLY. In order for footnotes to display, go through your paper in MS Word and type the full size numeral in each place a footnote appears. No need to delete original footnote, however; when you "copy" your paper to the pico editor, the full size numerals will display and the superscript footnotes will not. Note: This is exactly the same as if you were posting it as a message onto the confer system. When you are done cutting and pasting the essay, type control-X and it will ask if you want to save the file. If the editor correctly contains your full essay, type [y]es. Otherwise type [n]o and repeat the above steps. If you have specific questions you can email Online.Consulting@umich.edu, jmallin@umich.edu, or seph@umich.edu. In the past, students have been more successful resolving their problems in person with computing site consultants. Often the specific problems you might encounter cannot be easily understood by email. Lastly, when you are done, you can verify that your essay is properly stored in RT's directory.
