Hope for the future begins with the past. Our ancestors gave us the strength to endure,
traditions to enrich our lives, and faith to believe in ourselves. In the spirit of love, let us continue along
the path that's been prepared with our ancestor's sacrifice, knowledge and
love.

Family Reunions
"Behold, how
good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!" Psalm 133:1
The idea for having
family reunions was first thought of at a family picnic held at Belle Isle Park
in Detroit Michigan in 1962. With family
deaths and family members scattered about in Ohio, Michigan, West Virginia,
California and Illinois, Essie Calhoun Allen suggested that we have organized
Calhoun Family Reunion gatherings on a regular basis to bring the family
together.
For the next few
years, reunions were held in Flint, Michigan, where Essie and a number of other
family members lived. Following are the
dates and locations of Calhoun Family Reunions:

DNA Testing
DNA tests are
designed to determine the ancestry of a direct maternal lineage or a direct
paternal lineage. Although the tests
cannot necessarily tell you the particular tribe with which you share genetic
ancestry, the tests tell you the present-day country of Africa with which your
lineage shares genetic ancestry.
Several family members have had their DNA tested through an
organization called African Ancestry. To our knowledge, Jina Jackson was
the first. For genealogical purposes, her Mitochondrial DNA was tested
meaning her maternal family lineage. Jina's direct descendant maternal
ancestor is her mother, Doris Calhoun Jackson, the daughter of John Wesley
Calhoun. Frances Berry Franklin, a direct descendant and the daughter of
Mattie Calhoun Berry also had a Mitochondrial DNA test. Nathaniel Scott,
the son of James Scott, was tested for his Y-chromonsome of his father's
lineage. The results tell us that all male members in the Scott family
should have this lineage. Cleveland Calhoun, the oldest living male
Calhoun surnamed descendant of Matt Calhoun and the son of Joseph Calhoun, had
a Y-chromosome DNA test. By default, test results represent Calhoun
family lineage from Matt Calhoun. Other family members have expressed an
interest in this process. The results and comparisons were presented in a
report at the 2007 Calhoun Family Reunion.
