Within a week it was pockmarked with bullet holes and, despite the fact that it was mounted on a wall four stories above the street, someone had managed to spray-paint her face dark green and write "Noshow as Capt Don't" across the bottom panel.

He took it down six weeks later and included it in the "Artists without Backbones" show at The Cluttered Space. He listed the title as "Our Lady of Vengeance." It was the hit of the show. Kerensky devoted two paragraphs to it in her column. It sold for thirty-eight hundred dollars.

This was the beginning of a rapid descent into prosperity. His "Blight on Blight" period would be the most lucrative of his artistic career.
