JOSEPH BRUNNER OF ROTHENSTEIN, SCHIFFERSTADT, AND FREDERICK

by Donald Lewis Osborn

An excellent genealogical source for anyone decended from Joseph BRUNNER. Mr. Osborn has done a tremendous amount of work to compile this reference.

I have absolutely no financial interest in any way from the promotion of this book. It is referenced here only as a service for other genealogists that might find it useful.

An attractive, professionally type-set, printed, and bound hard-cover (cloth) 6 x 9-inch book of 600 pages. Limited number printed. Published 1991. EVERY NAME INDEXED-approximately 8,000 entries.

Over 3 decades of research including author's personal inspection of many primary records in the United States, Germany, and Switzerland dating from the 1400's, some of which are not available to the Mormons for microfilming. All sources are referenced.

Although this is the author's second book about the Brun(n)ers and associated families, Joseph Brunner of Rothenstein, Schifferstadt, and Frederick duplicates very little of the information in his 1968 book, Knowing the Bruners. The two books are companion volumes. The 1968 book included virtually all of the descendants of Samuel Bruner (1808-1886) whereas this second book includes only post-1968 information on Samuel's descendants that has come to the author's attention.

Contains a wealth of information that was unknown to the writer in 1968, much of which is here published for the first time: Joseph Brunner's baptism and confirmation; a few generations of his paternal ancestry and seven generations of his maternal line; records of Jacob Sturm/Storm's (1701-1757) two marriages and decendants of his thirteen children; and information on related Gah, Saur, and Strihl families.

Included is a five-generation (at places, less, at others, more) genealogy of Joseph (1678-1752+) and his descendants, separate chapters being devoted to the lines of each of Joseph's sons and daughters.

Descending genealogies of the brothers and sister of Samuel Bruner (1808-1886): Daniel (1790-1878), Peter (1791-1850), George (1793-1862), Jacob (1795-1880), John (1798-1846), Henry (1800-1875), Elizabeth (1802-1882) who married a Ziler and a Golliday, David (1804-1881), and Joseph (1811-1864). The chapter for Samuel includes ancestry, mostly Jeffries, of his wife, Catharine (Briggs) Bruner.

Joseph Asbury Bruner's (1820-1891) letters and private journals. Excerpted here are the more interesting of his experiences and thoughts, including all that involve Brun(n)er genealogy. Asbury was a Methodist minister of the last century in Ohio, Kentucky, and principally California. He even tells about his visits with General Sutter, the pioneer who struck gold in California. Several other Brun(n)er letters including one from the California gold rush in 1849.

Questions about a mystery P. Peter Bruner who appears to be a son of George Peter Brun(n)er (1766-1834), but, if so, he was a posthumous child with a mother other than Catharine (Sine) Bruner.

Information on associated Frederick County, Maryland families of Thomas, Sinn, and Zimmerman.

News of relics brought on the ships to the New World by the Brunner, Sturm, and Zimmerman families.

This latest Brun(n)er book includes photographs, copies of pertinent documents, and maps showing locations and movements of the families treated. A large, detached Ahnentafel chart includes all the ancestors of Samuel Bruner (1808-1886) known to the author as well as representative lines of descent from each of Samuel's children.
