ST. PETERSBURG CULTURE 

St. Petersburg's culture represents a unique blend of Russian tradition with European refined trends of the last three centuries. Since the beginning of the eighteenth century this city carried out its historic function as a "Window to Europe", as Pushkin famously defined the intention of the city's founder, Peter the Great. The following links will help you get familiar with the historic aspect of St. Petersburg culture, as well as with the state of cultural life in the city today. 

 
Cultural Heritage 

Hermitage - The home of world's second largest and most impressive collection of art, acquired since Peter the Great. It is a St. Petersburg landmark for all aspects of life - history, culture, art, politics, economy, etc...

Cultural Life in St. Petersburg Today 

Culture in St. Petersburg today has a strong political tint to it. Along with current developments in arts (see St. Petersburg art links) the city's leading publications reflect today's political debates and the effects of them on people's lifestyles. Here are some examples.

Chaspik - St. Petersburg's on-line magazine with sharp commentary on culture and politics in the city.

Gaudeamus - St. Petersburg's student paper - news in culture, politics, and art from students' perspectives. Written in upbeat and casual language, this site is easy and fun to browse.
