Sonic Dissociation

Here you have the Monster Truck of Switching Power Supplies. This is a full wave, DC-10MHz, 1kV, KW plus, switching power supply. The device is a fairly simple device, that is capable of driveing anything from high power Piezoelectric devices to Solid state Tesla coils. This device uses 4 opto-isolators 6n137, driving four UCC27321 fet driver chips, driving four RF power FETs IXYS IXFH12N100F (12A 1kV 13MHz Class F power fet) in a full wave bridge configuration. Each FET is cooled by a CPU Heatsink and fan. This thing is really something else. Thanks Paul and Steve for advice on designing this guy. Also is there is enough interest I may decide to breadboard this up nice and make it in to a kit for sale. (time depending, we'll have to see)


OK, Here is a BIRD RF power meter (with a 1kW slug) showing more that 500W going in to the piezoelectric nebulizer. To do this, I piped the power through an RG-58 (50 Ohm cable). This also allows me to pipe the RF anywhere in my garage (even to my new 8.5 in diameter Tesla coil) but that's a different story. Anyway, There is enough power here to make the water try to leap right out of the bowl...


Ok, here is what happens when you put about 500W in to the Piezoelectic Nebulizer disc. On the Left the unit is off, on the right the water is leaping up in a stream (at the left where the sound waves focus agains the wall of the container) and creating a stream of water that jumps to the right in a parabolic arc (picture on right). Also fog is produced at the focus, where the water leaps out.


Here is a close up of the stream of water jumping out of the surface of the water. Ever seen anything like this before?? Its definately unusual, to say the least..


Here are some examples of how much fog this device can produce. The left two photos are with the unit off, and the right shows the unit in operation. The operation frequency is about 2.4 MHz. I have a spring that holds the nebulizer unit in the back, and I had to replace it. This caused the resonance frequency to change, so the spring must have been working as an inductor as a matching network for the capacitive peizoelectic load.
