Project Summary

The study aims to examine the impact of monetary incentives to maintain HIV status on sexual behavior. In particular, after testing for HIV, this study randomizes financial incentives to rural Malawians for successfully maintaining status among approximately 1,600 men and women from three districts in Malawi. The project also studies different effects of couple or individual level incentives.

The project has consisted of a baseline survey (including HIV testing and offering incentives), 3 rounds of sexual diaries recording daily sexual activity, a follow-up survey (including HIV testing and distribution of financial incentives). This project has been conducted in coordination with the larger MDICP survey in Malawi.

This project includes collaborators Hans-Peter Kohler (University of Pennsylvania) and Frank Taulo (College of Medicine, Malawi).
