Grossman Woods - south section

The darker portion here is the wooded wetland area along Grossman Rd. The blue indicating the area which is almost always wet.

Young Maples dominate most of the northern (bottom) half of this section, giving way to Oak in the southern (or top) half. A few Swamp White Oak and several other types. Most of this area is good quality with little or no problems with invading species. Michigan Lilies, New England Asters, Jack-in-the-Pulpit, Trillium, Yellow (and violet) Violets, Marsh Marigold, Wild Iris, start the list in this section.

The brighter green 'lawn' area
bordering the northeastern woods
has been seeded with Big Bluestem, Indian Grass, Virginia Wild Rye grasses. June Grass and Little Bluestem grasses were also seeded into the lawn as you move east away from the woodline.

Just south of (above) the 'old lawn' area is a portion of the 'old field'. This is one of the many exciting little sections of Twenty Acres and a Mole, for it is here we have found Culverr's Root, Tall Coreopsis, New Jersy Tea, Thimble Weed, lots of Bee Balm, etc.... Pennsylvania Sedges form the base (holding out well against the invading european grasses. This fall '98 this 'old field' section will be burned (if all goes well).
