developing list of unassigned topics
the developing comics research encylopedia: artists | themes

date: ongoing

Two lists will be circulated in class: "Cartoonists" and "Comics Topics and Themes." This list is currently being developed. Check it and make further suggestions for inclusions if you wish. Some students have already requested certain topics-- look here to see.

You will choose 3 selections from the "Cartoonists" list and 2 from "Comics Topics and Themes." You may also choose to elaborate on an existing topic. See the developing comics research encylopedia: artists | themes

NOTA BENE: You must choose 2 artists of one gender and one of the other.

You will write a brief article on each of your 5 selections.
You will submit these articles to me electronically as plain text files. I prefer files created in TextEdit rather than microsoft word.

requirements for each article

• A minimum of two well-written (in your own words, of course) paragraphs discussing the artist or theme in question. Read a book or at least a story authored by artists you've chosen or have been assigned.

• A minimum of one good web link leading the reader to more information about the subject of the article.

• A minimum of two images representative of the artist or topic you are discussing.
Images should be submitted as high-quality jpegs. Rather than take images from the web, I encourage you to scan them yourself at 300 dpi. actual size.

GUIDELINES FOR SUBMISSION OF TEXT:

  • Each mini-essay should be a separate file with a descriptive name (so I can tell what it contains without opening the file).
  • Each mini-essay should be submitted in raw-text format. I do not like to receive Microsoft Word documents.
  • You may submit your mini-essays in 5 separate e-mails instead of attaching them as files. Paste your essay into the body of the e-mail. For the subject of the e-mail, use this structure: "research: artist: Clowes, Dan" or "research: topic: Alternative Comics of the 80s."
  • Your name should be on every essay you submit.
  • Put your weblinks after the body of the essay.
  • Here is an example of a good submission.

Your articles will be posted on the class website and will be attributed to you.
Your research will help to build a comics encyclopedia for the class. By choosing topics of your own or focusing on points of particular interest to you in the topics you choose, you are contributing to the content of the course, and you will thereby influence your fellow students and the students that follow you.

THIS IS A GRADED ASSIGNMENT. Each article is worth 20 points, for a total of 100.

Print this page and write your topics here so you don't forget what they are:
