Born in 1961 in Montreal, Canada, Michel Rabagliati grew up on Belgian and French comics rather than their American counterparts. While he drew comics as a youth, emulating favorites like Tintin, Spirou, Gaston, and Asterix, Rabagliati ended up studying graphic design and typography, becoming a graphic designer and commercial illustrator in 1982. It wasn’t until the 90s that he returned to the world of comics . Asked to design a logo for Canadian comics publisher Drawn & Quarterly, home to artists like Adrian Tomine, Joe Sacco, and Chris Ware, Rabagliati rekindled his interest in the medium. In 1999, he made his reentrance into the world of illustrated panels with Paul à la Campagne.

His full-length graphic novel debut Paul Has a Summer Job is currently available, having been published by Drawn & Quarterly in 2003. Penning a coming of age story set in a summer camp in Quebec, Rabliati eschews muscle-bound supermen for a simpler, more whimsical style. Paul Has a Summer Job relates the protagonist Paul’s experiences of responsibility and first love as a camp counselor one summer. Rabagliati fills the story with lively characters, humor, and warmth.

Rabagliati is currently residing in Montreal with his wife and daughter and working on the last installment of the Paul series, Paul Has an Apartment.
