CME FAQ Sheet #2: Title Pages

The title pages should make correct use of the tags for titles pages.

Distinguish between main titles (<TITLEPART TYPE="main">) and subtitles (<TITLEPART TYPE="sub">).

Both recto and verso (if not blank in original) should be included within the <TITLEPAGE>, separated by a <PB>. If the back of the title page isn't numbered, use <PB N="verso">. If the title page itself isn't numbered, as it usually isn't, use <PB> without any "N" value.

<LB>s should be used in order to preserve some semblance of the appearance of the original. However, <LB>s need not be used for every line break, but only where the line break serves as a kind of punctuation and is essential to the sense.

Bold (<B>) and italic (<I>) tags need only be used within the <TITLEPAGE> if such tags are essential to the sense. However, if such tags are already in place (presumably added to mimic appearance), they need not be removed.

Statements of responsibility ("re-edited from Ms. Harley 2252. . .by J. Douglas Bruce, PH.D., Professor. . .) should be in <BYLINE> tags, with the author tagged as <DOCAUTHOR> (but no other tags belong in the byline).

If there is more than one title page, place each in a separate <TITLEPAGE> tag. If one is a "half title", give it a TYPE attribute of "half".
