AmVerse FAQs #3: Chapter numbers, stanza numbers, etc.

Often the divisions of a text are numbered:

Chapter V

Then stood the realm in great jeopardy long while,
for every lord that was mighty of men made him
strong, and many weened to have been king. Then
Merlin went to the Archbishop of Canterbury . . .

Stanzas are sometimes numbered too:

3.

Through many dangers, toils, and snares
I have already come.
'Tis grace that brought me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home.

It is possible, and does no harm, to record this numeration scheme using the "N" attribute of the relevant <DIV> or <LG> tag, like this:

<DIV2 TYPE="chapter" N="5">
<LG TYPE="stanza" N="3">

But it turns out that we do not actually make any use of the information in the "N" attribute, so my advice is: DON'T BOTHER TO PUT IT IN.

On the other hand, be sure to tag such numbers, when they appear at the head of divisions, with <HEAD> tags:

<HEAD>Chapter V</HEAD>
<HEAD>3.</HEAD>
