Special Searching Terms for This Topic

Much of the best information is from nonprofit organizations and private individuals with similar concerns. Because of laws such as the Americans with Disabilities Act, more commonly referred to as ADA, there are many government information sources and legislative issues. There are similar laws in many other countries, as well as international organizations. It is particularly important to take these into account if you want to travel outside the United States, but it can also be useful to compare types of resources, standards, and information across countries. Persons interested in advocacy for the civil rights of persons with disabilities may be particularly interested in these types of resources. To focus a search more towards these types of resources (goverment or nonprofit sources), you may wish to add to your search string either (but not both) of the following two search strings.

Adding these search strings can also help to avoid offensive or inappropriate Web sites, but it will not entirely exclude them. While there have been recommendations on how to avoid pornography and Web sites that focus on the person as an object with many of the health issues discussed, this issue is of special importance in seeking information about disabilities. One of the issues is how to interact with a person who has a disability in daily encounters, at work, at home, or at school.2

That it is even necessary to talk about disability etiquette indicates how often people with disabilities are not treated as persons. Given that persons with disabilities are often treated as children or objects by persons who are well meaning, it should not come as a surprise that they are especially targeted by, or vulnerable to, persons whose intentions are not so honorable. For this reason, it may be a wise choice to include one of the following search strings as additions to your search topics.

The language or words used to search for information about disability can also be a sensitive topic. There is a great quantity of pejorative or offensive language that seems to exist solely for the purpose of verbally insulting or injuring persons with differences. In the case of persons with disabilities, preferred language has evolved over time to avoid offense. A Web site may have excellent resources or information, but use outdated language, such as housing sites that use the term "handicapped" in the name of the organization. To locate those sites, one must sometimes use the outdated language in the search. Some persons with disabilities have claimed the offensive terms as a personal badge of identity and pride, and thus you may also see Web sites in which individuals refer to themselves as "gimps," "crips," "cripples," or "wheelies." Use of the offensive terms in this manner creates passionate discussion and dissention within the community of disabled persons.1 These discussions may offer excellent information, and some such sites are included in the lists of important sites. At the same time, searching with these terms may also retrieve sites intended to offend, which is a risk of including these terms.

Disability Hotlines

NOTE: Many businesses and organizations of general interest will have a special phone line or TDD TTY line to use in lieu of voice lines. Their Web sites or advertising materials often list these numbers as a "disability hotline". A search for hotlines will therefore retrieve large numbers of phone numbers for companies who would love to sell something. If you have a specific organization or topic in mind, it is best to combine that with the recommended search strings.

Publications on the Internet about Disabilities or for Persons with Disabilities

NOTE: This topic area has an unusually large number of publications available both in print and online, as well as several excellent publications that are electronic only. This is a small sampling of the titles available that are of general interest; for professionals; for specific age groups, specific disabilities, or other special interests; and indicative of the unusual range of topics available. Also included are special theme issues in publications with a broader scope. Chances are fairly good that if you have a special interest not shown here and search for that topic with a selection of words like "newsletter," "journal," or "magazine," you will find something relevant.
