Peter Chaim Weinstein

Hello! I am an Information Scientist at the Altarum Institute. I do research in organizational change, knowledge sharing, decision support, agent-based systems, and complex systems.

Projects

I’m currently working on the Altarum Health Sector Model (AHSM). This model predicts the effects of health reforms. We put a lot of thought into answering important questions about health reform in a straightforward way:

  • What changes in care received?
  • Who pays?
  • What is the impact on providers?

I’m also deeply involved in Altarum’s efforts to transform itself to lead transformation of the health system. We are currently launching a set of change initiatives to articulate and express our vision of  Systems Research for Better Health”.

For the long term, I'm excited about an idea that I call Consensus Builder – a place on the internet where people will:

  • Speak about the things they know and care about
  • Listen to what others have to say (if or when they are ready to listen)
  • Be counted by a system that continually aggregates and publishes the beliefs of all participants.

Consensus Builder is thus designed to organize and facilitate political dialog involving large numbers of participants. This project expresses my dream that we can self-consciously create the kind of society that we want to live in.

The Business Process Interoperability - Living Ontologies (BPILO) project is developing technology to unify and compare models of business processes. This project has potential to add scientific rigor to cross-organizational business process reengineering.

Consensus Builder and BPILO are both based on Living Ontologies -- an approach to the W3C's Semantic Web that provides a practical way for users to create and interact with models of knowledge.

Personal

My nuclear family includes my wife Jennie, my teenage sons Jason and Jack, and horses, cats, dogs, and chickens including Misty, Kona, Psipsina, Golem, Patches, Puffin, Sirius, Chipmunk, and Muff. I love to travel through the outdoors in various ways and in particular by canoe. I’m working on mindfulness, which is a spiritual practice to develop compassion and wisdom. Still have a ways to go.

See my dusty University of Michigan web page for more information.
