Sudden stratospheric warmings : Polar vortex model (1.8 MB)

This browser cannot play the embedded video file.

The stratosphere's winter polar vortex is modeled as a Gaussian vortex centered over the north pole, and a quasi-topographic forcing function is applied to model the effects of breaking planetary waves affecting the stratosphere from below, as motivated by Juckes & McIntyre, Nature, 1987.
