Instabilities in Systems with Threshold Dynamics: Experiments and Theory

First experimental study, using electronic circuits, of highly nonlinear dynamics, including chaos of coupled stick-slip elements. Numerical results are used to analyze the dynamics.

First experimental verification, using granular assemblies, of the Guttemberg-Richter (power) law for earthquake intensities.
