UNIT GOAL AND OBJECTIVES The goal of this unit is to learn how to screen a client for nutritional problems using the following methods: dietary study, anthropometric measurements, physical-behavioral (clinical) screening, and integration of nutrition-related laboratory findings and feeding abilities.
After using this unit you will be expected to be able to carry out the following tasks:
Nutrition Assessment

Identify events that influenced the client's current nutritional status.
Identify nutritional problems using the client's assessment data:
- analyze adequacy of his diet using the Food Guide Pyramid
- plot height or weight on a graph and identify possible causes of growth retardation.
- identify clinical and biochemical signs of nutritional deficiencies.
- identify feeding problems affecting food intake
Develop a nutritional care plan for the client:
- identify goals
- propose the length of time in which these goals will be accomplished.
- recommend ways to improve the client's nutritional status

You are encouraged to use such resources as PubMed, the National Institutes of Health Library and other online sources for general nutrition . (Just remember the <BACK> button so you can return). The unit is designed to allow you to work through the material in any order as long as you complete the quiz .If this is your first unit, you might want to try this approach:
- You might prepare by reading the references in the Suggested Readings.
- Remember to refer to these directions if needed.
- Read the Goal and Objectives above on this page. Please review this section carefully to make sure that they have been satisfied upon completing the unit.
- Read the Unit Background to become familiar with the unit topic and related nutrients.
- Refer to the Glossary if you run into unfamiliar terms.
- Read the Client Overview and browse through the Client Records to familiarize yourself with the client.
- Proceed to the Learning Exercises. The objectives for these exercises were listed previously. The assessment exercises are designed to promote thinking and problem solving.
- The final section is the Quiz. When finished, your score will be submitted to your instructor.
