I am a computer systems technologist who has had an ever-evolving role in technology at the University of Michigan since 1988. I began with providing desktop support to users of the public computer labs, rising to a position in which I managed some of these labs and supervised other staff, and then moving into system administration work. In my time as a system administrator, I have acquired skill and experience with a variety of server based technologies, web design, database design, and digital video editing. My platform of choice is Macintosh, and I also have favorable things to say about other brands of UNIX and NetWare. Although I have experience with Windows, I am not looking for a position where I would be working primarily with that system.
My experience has focused on Mac OS X Server running on Apple Xserve hardware, though I have had training and some experience with servers running UNIX, Netware, and Windows. I have worked with all of the tools and services provided as part of the Mac OS X Server package and added other services such as ISC DHCP.
I pride myself on designing web sites that are simple, elegant, and easy to navigate, rather than web sites that are cluttered, ugly, and difficult to navigate. I have experience with Javascript, CSS, PHP, and MySQL to produce sites that are functional and compliant with the latest standards. I can also hack a line or two to make the site work well with non-compliant browsers like Internet Explorer, and do so without taking the site out of compliance.
I have had a great deal of experience in designing databases using FileMaker Pro, but I have recently been translating that experience into making web-based databases using PHP and MySQL.
I currently work as one of a three person team who take care of all of the information technology needs for the School of Art & Design. We handle everything including server management, network planning, desktop support, web design, database design, and strategic planning.
I received additional training in server administration for Windows NT, UNIX, and NetWare and then went to work as a system administrator for ITD Contract services. Working in that position, I was lent to departments all over the campus to take care of whatever information technology needs they had.
In addition to my previous duties, I was put in charge of several computer sites (one at a time) and supervised all of the staff at the site.
I worked with other monitors to facilitate access to technology resources for the users of the computer site. I helped to maintain the physical site and provided technical support for the users of the lab.
