Frequently Asked (and Answered) Questions

If you don't find the answer to your questions here, then I guess I better answer more of my emails!

Q11)My paints seem really thick and don't flow evenly. What's wrong with them? How can I fix them?

A11) Chances are, your paints are old or haven't been sealed properly. Your first option of course, is to go out and buy some new ones, but you can use thinner to dilute the paint. But becareful. Too much paint thinner will kill the paint by either just eating away at it. Thinner also tends to rob your paints of luster. Too little thinner will make the paint lumpy. Just add a little more thinner if this is the case, and mix well.

Q12)What is the best type of paint to use for plastic models? Enamels or acrylics? And what brand?

A12) To be honest, I don't think there is a "best" paints. This obviously doesn't answer the question though. Now there are definitely paints that work better with different materials (both acrylics and enamels are fine with plastic--just be careful with enamels, they are very good at eating up materials), but as for types, it's up to your preference. If they work, they work. Buy some plastic from your local hobby store and test them out. Personally though, I like water based paints.

Q13)Can/Should I paint with Gundam Markers? If so, where can I get them?

A13) Yes, you can certainly paint with Gundam Markers. In fact, the colors provided in the selection are perfect matches to the models (you can't go wrong with Gundam White or Gundam Eye Green). You've definitely save time from not having to mix colors. On the other hand, "should" you paint with Gundam Markers? Being that you can really only get three widths with the markers, detailing and big splotches of area that need one solid color could be very difficult. Also, Gundam Markers do not illiminate brush strokes. Instead you get Marker strokes. You can rid of these in the same way as brush strokes: by painting in layers. Another note about Gundam Markers is that you want to paint "fast". The paint likes to drip and coagulate so get those layers on quick. (Gundam Markers are available in 16 colors btw: 8 in a basic color set and 8 in a metallic set. If you have an old set they are water based. The newer sets are all alcohol based colors and tend to stick better to the plastic. The only place I've really seen them on the net is: Another Site of HLJ)

Q14)How should I do detail lines? And do I really have to?

A14) You absolutely do not have to put in detail ("panel lines" lines (those things that help define the mold lines and such). But they do help the model look better in my opinion. A common mistake is to use black every where, but in my experience using a variation of the color of the main color surrounding the lines just looks better (for example, for a white base, I would use a light grey to do the detail lines.) Here is a handy guide to doing them that I found in HJ:
