This project creates a fabric-covered inset mat. My original intention for this technique was to create a portfolio box cover with an inset original photograph. Methods for this type of bookbinding project and plans for equipment can be found in books listed in the reference section.

Tools:

• Mat Cutter
• Ruler/Straightedge
• Brushes

Materials:

• Mat Board-two pieces the same size. It's a good idea to use the same thickness for back and front boards.
• Fabric (see note below)
• Scrap paper-to use when gluing
• Plastic Wrap

The choice of fabric will be important. The material must be tightly woven to prevent adhesive seeping through and marring the front. Testing the fabric with various glues is a good idea. Additonally, you might let the glue almost completely set before laying down the fabric.

Procedure

1) Trim photograph to desired dimensions

2) Measure the trimmed photograph

3) Lay out a bevel mat somewhat larger than the photograph (see mat cutting)

4) Cut the mat, saving the scrap from the center.

5) Laminate the upper and lower boards

6) Glue the photograph
