June, 2004

Finished out the inside of the centerboard trunk, glued it together, and added the trunk logs. Applied the first layer of 4oz cloth to the bottom of the boat.

Long and productive weekend. The primary victory was attaching the completed centerboard trunk to the hull. Managed to get it in place without assistance, despite the weight and awkward location. Also ground down all the nail points protruding through the inside of the hull. Applied 9 oz tape to the chines, stem, and stern.
I took some time out to read Peter Nichol's Sea Change this week. I'm not sure how to react to the manner in which he loses his boat. The inability to accept the existence of a problem early enough to fix it is a common psychological problem it seems among sailors.

The deck beam mold
June 29, 2004
The deck and cabin beams are going to be laminated of 1/2-inch plywood. I know that there will be some rebound in the laminated beams when they are removed from the form. I also know that I want to increase the crown a couple of inches from the original design, but that the exact amount is not critical. It makes sense, then, to build the deck beam mold first with an exaggerated crown to find out what the rebound will be, before making the deck beam mold.

Off on an extended vacation to Washington D.C., with a side trip to Mystic Seaport.
