the all-seeingeyeBrainstormers!

Brainstormers! is a travelling theater group performing in grade schools and junior high schools throughout Michigan, and in Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. The group uses improvisational theater to teach the elements of story writing. The complete program consists of two parts. The first is the Takeoff show, where the components of a story are demonstrated by a mix of audience volunteer and professional actors. The follow-up Skywriter show, usually performed about 6 weeks after the Takeoff show, uses teacher-selected stories which the students have created as a part of their classroom work. Brainstormers! also run a series of teacher workshops, where educators learn methods for injecting creative motivation into the classroom.

From 1993 to 2001 I was the technical director for the company. The technical director is responsible for designing and building portable and collapsible sets and stage properties. Sets must be adaptable, simple, and robust in order to meet the needs of the performers as well as the demands of constant travelling and handling. Set construction involves metalworking, woodworking, fabric construction, and electrical components.
