The newly renovated living room is far brighter than it used to be, with a built-in cabinet at the kitchen end for book and the clutter of electronics.
The living room had six of these light fixtures. The story is that they were discovered in a box in the crawlspace during an earlier renovation, and converted from gas to electricity. I doubt this, as gas fixtures tended to point upwards, rather than down. These would be a very poor gas design at best. Regrettably, the wiring in these fixtures has deteriorated, and the only sockets that will fit have an insulator which breaks down in less than a year when installed pointing downwards. The result is a dramatic short circuit with sparks and smoke, so they've been removed and replaced.
