A free, easy-to-run exercise to introduce the four-step

Improvement Kata to your team. Takes ~ 1 hour.

Use this exercise to share the Improvement

Kata pattern with your team.

The Improvement Kata exercise (also called

“Kata in the Classroom” or “KiC”) is used by

companies, consultants, and educators around

the world as a simple introduction to the four

steps of the Improvement Kata. Anyone can

run this exercise. Everything you need – a

step-by-step PowerPoint file and all the

materials – are at www.katatogrow.com.

The IK exercise is a one-hour activity with three-minute rounds that has teams

work on a number of self-generated iterations to complete a small puzzle. The

teams follow the four-step Improvement Kata pattern to establish a goal and then

experiment toward it from round to round.

The PowerPoint file at katatogrow.com walks you through facilitating the exercise. In

“presenter mode” the file has prompts that you simply read aloud to run the exercise.

The exercise works best with three or more teams of 4-5 persons per team.

The free, downloadable materials can be adjusted to suit your particular needs.

However, it is recommended that you run the exercise exactly as it is designed

one or two times before you modify it.

Have a great time with the Improvement Kata exercise!
