Eagle Come Home
Background
This was my group's entry in WolverineSoft's 48 hour game development contest 5 (January 2008).
The theme of the contest this year was "honoring Stephen Colbert"
The group consisted of Keenan Patterson, Feng Li, and myself. Keenan did the vast majority of the coding,
Feng did the menu screens and back-up programming, and I did most of the art work including the 3-D modeling.
As always the games were judged by the rest of the contestants and several official judges (professors from UofM
and MSU I think). Our game took 8th place out of 15 teams.
The game ended up looking relatively good with a few minor exceptions with no bugs, but it is very short and
quite easy to beat. The major complaints seem to be that the enemies are too easy to kill and there is only
level. We intended to include boss battles and 2 to 3 more levels, but we ran out of time.
The game is posted as complete, and it is a fully functioning game, but I would like to make some updates if I
ever have the time. The main points I would address in changing the game are:
- Add the three other levels that I created the artwork for (Sky level, Ice level, Highway/Traffic level)
- Limit the range and the rep-rate of the laser so it is more difficult to clear stages.
- Add a health system to the enemies so some require more than one hit.
- Increase the damage done by collisions with enemies
- Speed up movement and increase level length
- Add movement to enemies
- Modify the side backgrounds to include several layers for a more 3-D effect
- Redo placement in level and artwork for a few enemies (avoid floating ground animals)
- Render enemies from back to front to eliminate the occluding of enemies in the background by transparent regions
The three of us have talked about continuing with the general idea of the project, but making it a space/sci-fi
themed game instead. If that project every works out I will post it here as well.
Game Description
In Eagle Come Home (that was a working title that never got replaced...), you control Stephen Colbert Jr.
who has become lost in the Canadian wilderness. You must guide Stephen Jr. home through a barage of evil
Canadian foes. Luckily a botched laser eye surgery has give Stephen Jr. actual laser eyes, which you can
use to destroy all enemies that cross your path.
Eagle Come Home is 3-D rail shooter similar to Starfox. WASD keys are used to control the eagle's
movement, and the Spacebar fires Stephen Jr.'s eye lasers. Presently all enemies are defeated with one hit,
and colliding with an enemies causes you to lose 10 out of 100 HP.

Download
Eagle Come Home is available for download through the WolverineSoft website. Its page can be found
here
Note: This game is much larger than any of my games because it was written in a c++ engin and has 3-D models
as opposed to the usual visual basic games. Additionally in order to run the game you should run the files in
the redist folder.
