Discussion Project #4: Family Interview

History 467

Week 9 or 10

Due: in discussion section, March 6-7 or March 13-14

Note: You may choose to submit this assignment either during Week 9 or Week 10. Both of these weeks address themes emerging from the polarized climate of the 1960s and the social/political movements of the 1970s: feminism, the Religious Right, conservatism, culture wars, and more.

Project: Conduct an oral interview with one or both of your parents, or another person of your acquaintance, about their memories and experiences during particular events of the 1960s/1970s era. You might choose to ask them about their relationship to one or more of the variety of social and political movements described in the Bruce Schulman book The Seventies (Week 9) or to the feminist movement described in the Ruth Rosen book The World Split Open (Week 10). You also can choose to focus on events discussed in lectures before spring break, such as civil rights, the youth revolt, and the Vietnam War.

Bring to discussion section a short description, about one single-spaced page in length, which summarizes the key insights and the highlights from your oral interview. You may maintain the anonymity of the interview subject if you choose. Think of this as a flexible assignment designed to gain firsthand insight on Baby Boomer perspectives of some of the key events of the 1960s and the 1970s.
