Do you like movies? Boy, I sure do. In fact, I like movies so much that I "studied" film in college! "So what?" you might be saying. "All that fancy book-larnin' ain't gonna save you now, boy!" Well, people are always asking me, "Hey, Emery, is this movie any good?" Really, they do. Okay, this never happens, I just wanted to feel important. But I hope that some day someone will actually ask my opinion on something, and when that day comes, I want to be prepared. So I have compiled a collection of short reviews of some movies that are good and some that suck. Bad. Like a Hoover vacuum cleaner flying into a black hole while watching a Detroit Lions game.
A word of warning: In all good film majors a battle constantly rages, between the intelligent, educated part of the mind which has been force-fed Eisenstein and Griffith and Murnau and uses phrases like "mise-en-scene" and "the concept of The Other," and the more low-brow, film-geeky part of the mind that loves Hong Kong action movies and has seen Beavis and Butthead Do America six times.
Please take this into consideration and realize that just because I like a movie doesn't necessarily mean it's a "great film." So, stick that in yer pipe and smoke it, butthole.
