Sketchy beginning of study after a color sketch by Berthe Morisot. She was the quintessential Impresionist painter and showed her work in all their exhibitions. She was known for her drawing skill and the ability to capture likeness and character with great economy of means, using only a few brush strokes. She was also an extrordinary colorist. Not in the sense of using color to acheive 3-dimensional modeling as Mary Cassatt did, but in her rich palette. She was instumental in causing rich color usage to become regarded as feminine and color subsequently became somewhat devalued by painters such as Picasso.
