  • Hi Simon!

    Looks from your pictures like
spring has made it to Ann Arbor!

I love the crayon sorting series...
Marina STILL dumps all of her
crayons all over the floor from a big
box when she needs to write
    something. However, these
days she is starting to learn what
you learned a couple of years ago...
little baby sisters eat just about
anything you drop...including crayons, stickers, and barbie shoes.

We hope to come to Ann Arbor
in July (and again in August) and
hope you will be around to visit
    in Northwood.

    Love,

    Kathy, Marina, Nathan and
    Janie

  • Boy, did your body respond well to those platelets, or what? It's as though it was "thirsty" for them and drank them all up and then said, "Ahhhh! That's better!" ;-)

We're starting soccer season around here. Do you guys like to watch or play soccer?? Both Danny and Laura are playing this season, which is fun for them and a little crazy for us! But it's nice for them to get out on the field on nice days and run around chasing after the ball.

Anyway, glad you're doing better, Simon. Hope Miriam is feeling better, too. Take care,

Kris, Rob, Emily, Danny, and Laura

  • Hi Simon! Best wishes to you as you go through this difficult-sounding time in the hospital. Do you have toys to play with there? Do you have friends there, besides your visitors? We loved the pictures of you and Miriam in your spiffy-looking raincoats. I hope you get to wear yours soon. Blue is definitely your color! We were inspired by the message to you with a poem. Here's another one. Hope you think it's funny!

    ****
    Toes in My Nose
    by Bruce Lansky

I bet that I could do it.
My friends all said, "No way."
And now my toes are in my nose,
so they will have to pay.

They each owe me a dollar--
of that there is no doubt.
    There's just one little problem.
    I cannot get them out!

    ****

    Lots of love,
    Marta, Paul, Sam

  • Hey Miriam, I saw the new pictures of you and Simon today. I wish we still lived in AA, because I just know that you and my daughter, Nicole, would be great friends! She also has curly hair (blonde though..."golden" she calls it) and loves dresses and dolls! Maybe we can all get together sometime, somewhere!!??!!

  • Simon:

I sure hope you and your sister both get over this round of the yukkies. I'll bet you can't wait to get out and play in this beautiful weather! Have you lost any teeth yet? My son Jesse has his first VERY LOOSE TOOTH and is very excited about it.

Shel Silverstein asked me to send you these two poems that he thought you'd like:

    Shoe Talk:

There's no one to talk with--
    I'll talk with my shoe.
    He does have a tongue
And an inner soul, too. He's awfully well polished,
    So straightlaced and neat
    (But he talks about nothing
    But feet-feet-feet).

    THE TONGUE STICKER-OUTER

They say that once in Zanzibar
A boy stuck out his tongue so far,
It reached the heavens and touched a star,
    Which burned him rather badly.

I wasn't there, but they say that lout
Now keeps his tongue inside his mouth,
But if you ask him to stick it out...
I think he'll do it gladly.

  • Happy Post-Easter!

Sounds as though you had a different sort of Easter than you usually do, huh? But I'm betting the hospital folks were all especially nice to those who were on the 7th floor for the holiday!

Anyway, we've been thinking about you, Simon, and are glad that your numbers are back up again so you can do some more chemo. And we're especially excited for you that you're going to be part of the program at Memorial Sloan Kettering -- for one thing, my boss knows, and thinks very highly of, someone who works on the neuroblastoma project there (it might even be Dr. Kushner -- I'll have to ask...); and for another thing, it means you'll be right in our very own state! If you're traveling by car and can visit us either coming or going, please feel free! We know germs are an issue, so it just may not be possible; but if it should happen to work out, we'd be glad to host any and all of you -- even for an overnight, if you decide you want to break up the trip....

In the meantime, take care, keep up the good work, and we'll continue to think about all of you.

Love, Kris, Rob, Emily, Danny, and Laura

I just wanted to say thank you for sharing this beautiful website with me. It was very nice meeting you today on the 7th floor. I enjoyed all the photos and reading about your incredible son. My two boys will love the link on birds (they are big bird watchers). We will keep all of you in our thoughts and prayers. I'm sure all of your knowledge and experience will aide you in your transition to a new city and new doctors. Sounds like Simon will be able to teach them a few things.
    Take care,

Been thinking about you!!! We sure had a good time seeing your Grandparents on their way to and from China. Bet you'll get to hear a lot of stories. They told us how 4 men pulled a boat upriver with 16 people in it. Can you imagine that? We miss you. We are going up to the snow tomorrow to have one more weekend in the mountians. It's rained a lot this week so we hope to have lots of new snow to ski on and play in.

    miss you,

We are hoping that your body is producing MORE and MORE and MORE platlets.
Madi and Lexi's Nana and Papa are here visiting and we are having lots of fun --sunny day picnics in the park and rainy day picnics in the basement, hiking around, and "lots of drawing and making books" says Lexi.
Madi was in the hospital briefly for some surgery on her throat at our Children's Hospital and it helped her lots to think about how brave you are about having to go to the hospital. Madi brought a bear named Oobie to the hospital--he stayed with her the whole time even in surgery and recovery --"Oobie helped me feel better" says Madi.

We love you all and think of you daily,

We've had too much rain this springtime in Maryland. They talk about floods now! Not a flood like Noah, but a couple roads might be blocked. Try playing soccer when you have to wade to the ball in a monster puddle!

Here's to praying for the platelets! Maybe we could make a song out of that some day!

    Lots of love -

We are just writing to say "hi" and to let you know we are thinking of you. Simon, we imagine you are back in chemo, and if that's so we certainly hope it is going o.k. Imagination can be a wild thing, so I might be wrong, but I also imagine you getting pretty darn grumpy and tired, maybe even down-right mad. If I'm right, you are not too different than me (and lots of other people, too). I'm sure that with your loving and frisky family, there are some sweet times and some funny times, too.

By the way, did you hear the one about the mom who put a fire cracker under the pancakes On April Fools Day?

    She blew her stack!

    All our best wishes,

This time Laura wanted to be the one to send a joke, which (we're entirely sure) she made up herself:

    Q. What happened to the grapes and the corn, um, when they crossed the road (pause) uh, and went into the barn (pause) and, um, saw the horse?

    A. The horse ate them! :-)

    And there you have it!

Enjoy school, Simon; and we hope the mistletoe helps with the next round of chemo! Love,

We want to send our good wishes for Simon's next round of treatment - thanks for keeping us updated! We also wanted to let you know something amazing that happened to us this week. We had taken our car in for some service, and when we went to retrieve it, the service people had just found a box with 5 tiny kittens in it! We took them to the vet, caught the stray mom & took her there too, and now they're living happily in Emma's bedroom! They're only about 2 1/2 weeks old, very cute, and would love to have you visit if you'd like!

  • Glad to read the good word on those tests! I'm sure it's frustrating that positive results don't always come as quickly or as conclusively as you all might like; but it's good that things are at least moving in the right direction.

Here are a couple of new jokes to celebrate the occasion (Dan picked out some new joke/riddle books the other day):

Q: What did the silly man call his pet zebra?

    A: "Spot!"

    = = =

Q: What sort of hippo is *always* hungry?

    A: A hippobottomless!

Have yourselves a nice, relaxing weekend. And here's hoping Monday's counts are high enough to embark on this promising line of treatment again! All the best,

I hope you get only good news from your scans. I also hope that you and your sister will make a play date to come over and play with my son Jesse and daughter Evie because they're very similar ages and I know you'd have a good time.

In the mean time, I wanted to share with you a funny poem that Jesse picked out for me to send to you. It's by Shel Silverstein in his book "Falling Up." Don't tell his copyright lawyer that I typed it here for you--just enjoy it!

    Furniture Bash

    The hand of the clock
Pinched the foot of the bed,
So the foot of the bed
Kicked the seat of the chair,
So the seat of the chair
Sat on the head of the table,
So the head of the table
Bit the leg of the desk,
So the leg of the desk
Bumped the arm of the couch,
So the arm of the couch
Slapped the face of the clock.
And they pinched and they punched
And they banged and they knocked
And they ripped and they flipped,
And they rolled and they rocked,
    And the poor dresser drawer
    Got a couple of socks.
    There was sawdust and springs
When I turned on the light
    After that horrible furniture fight.
And that's the truth, no lie--no joke.
    And that's how your furniture
    All got broke.

  • Love the new pics! Especially noted Miriam's Leap Pad (Laura has one, too, and has had fun making music with one of her books!) and that *very* cool green shirt of Simon's ... the one with the gecko or iguana or whatever it was on it! We just got back from visiting my dad in Florida and saw some miniature iguana-type critters that like to hang out on the logs and in the bushes around Grandpa's house. Danny and Laura were very interested in them, and also in the real, live alligators they saw at a nearby wildlife preserve!

I'm afraid I haven't been to visit your site in quite some time, Simon, because earlier this month, just before our FL trip, I was doing my own tour of doctor's offices and emergency rooms (we should compare notes someday!). Had some minor outpatient surgery but this time around I didn't do as well with the anesthesia as I have in the past -- the just-in-case bucket got lots of use! Then, like you, I got a funny rattly cough that the doctors didn't like the sounds of, so I went to be evaluated at the ER, where they gave me lots of meds to take, some of which tasted pretty yucky.... So, looking fairly droopy, I sat in my recliner for several days (lieing down in bed wasn't comfortable for some reason) and thought about you and wondered: "Is this how Simon feels sometimes??" But once again, you were my inspiration! I took my medicines bravely, like I knew you would; and I drank lots of liquids to cleanse my body of the nasty germs that had come to visit, like I imagined you would; and I tried each day to find one or two things that I could do better and more comfortably than I had the day before, as I envisioned you may do whenever you're "coming out of" a treatment phase and trying to get your body back in gear. And you know what? It worked! You gave me the strength to put one foot in front of the other and to work hard to help myself get better, just as you're working to do!

So thanks, Pal, for all that help you didn't even know you were giving me!!

In recognition of doing things that are healthy for our bodies, here's an exercise joke:

Q: What do birds do to get ready for exercise?

    A: Worm-ups!!! ;-)

Continuing to think about all of you,
Kris, Rob, Emily, Danny, and Laura

We would hug you if we could - and if you would let us! I very much enjoyed meeting you when I stopped by your house not too long ago (while you were eating dinner with your granparents and Miriam!). I enjoyed seeing Miriam, too. You are a very good talker and the conversation was interesting. I was especially interested to learn that you like transformers. I think it goes with the butterfly on the front of your website -butterflies are the great transformers of the world!

I have one question. From the new photos, it looks like you think math is fun. Is that true??

    Best wishes until soon,

  • Simon,

It sounds like this week has been a long one for you. I hope that the treatments don't wear out all of your energy. You sure are lucky to get to play all those games I was reading about. I hope to play one of those with you the next time you are in Ohio.

I understand you like jokes. Here is one for you:
Why do firemen wear red suspenders?
    To hold their pants up!

Tell those little blastoma cells to go hang out with the Chicken Pox cells - somewhere else!

    We're thinking of you.

    Geoff

  • Simon and family,
I sure hope your next treatment went as well or better than you planned. I can't imagine going through all the medical visits, pokes, tests and medicines that you do, and adding school and play on top - You're an inspiration!

Here's a new joke for you (doesn't look like you've had any new submissions lately...)

Q: What's black and white and red all over?

    A: A skunk with a diaper rash!

    Keep smiling!
    Jean
