  • Hi. Just want you to know that you are not alone in this place of waiting. All of us are waiting and praying and hoping with you.
Jim saw Lexi and Madi's mom, Lawrie, at the Children's Hospital here where they both work! They talked about you!! We actually keep in touch better by reading your message board than by seeing each other here in Seattle. You pull us together! I hope to see them soon. I'd love to see you all soon, too; we're trying to figure out a time when we can visit Michigan.
Hang in there and remember all of us who are supporting you each step of the way!
    Love, Sally

  • Hi, Simon! I liked when you said that the actors in Frog and Toad were being so still that they could have had a scan! My kids and I were playing a game this weekend that was kind of like that: We all moved around doing crazy, wiggly things, making funny faces at each other until the person who was "it" said "freeze." Then we all had to be still as statues (or as people getting scanned!). If anyone moved, then they were "it" next. Danny decided, though, that Laura should get "3 strikes" before she was "it," 'cause she's the youngest and it's sometimes hard for her to be still. Sounds as though *you've* learned how to be still, though! Hey, maybe you and Miriam and your friends could try this game sometime -- if the other kids don't know how to do it, you can show them all how to "freeze" because you're getting to be such an expert!

Congrats to your dad on his job offer; congrats to Miriam on being 2-1/2; congrats to you and your mom, too, for keeping your good senses of humor while you're working with your doctors to make those balls say "Adios!" Keep up the good work! Love, Kris, Rob, Emily, Danny, and Laura Hopkins

We love looking at pictures of you and Miriam and thought it was especially neat to see you both looking at a computor in one of the pictures because that is what we are doing right now. Madi signs, "The Same!!!"
Madi wants to tell you about something special that happened last night. The tooth fairy came and took her first tooth and gave her "lots of money, 1,2,3,4 quarters"
We love you lots and hold you all in our thoughts and prayers.

much love, Lawrie, Curt, Madi and Lexi
Lexi has one more important thing to say, "GO AWAY LUNG BALL, GO AWAY LUNG BALL, GO AWAY LUNG BALL" --She speaks for all of us.

  • Hi Simon -

Now that you know how to wash your armpits and legpits, and you take your mom and dad out to the movies, you should ask them to watch Shrek with you. Right at the beginning of the movie, Shrek washes his armpits with lots of MUD! You'd love it!

I was glad to hear you got to visit all your Oberlin friends and specially your First Church family. I know many of them are praying for you. As are we here in Maryland.

    Have a great day!

Simon and Miriam-- we love the pictures of your playroom! When we lived in family housing near you, I think your playroom had a big comfy (blue?) chair in it, but by the looks of things this was moved to accommodate all your "fun stuff!" Thinking of you often!

  • Dear Simon:

I've been thinking about you and read all about what a great job you've been doing with your treatments-and also that it sounds like you're learning all your numbers and starting to read and getting ready for kindergarden! My son Jesse is also getting ready for kindergarden. He's the red head who was at the library with me when we saw you and your mom a few weeks ago. He spent a week at Mott's a year ago for a serious illness and now, a year later, hardly remembers it. I hope that it won't be too long until you're all recovered and don't even remember all this yukky stuff! And Jesse's little sister Evie also goes to Gari music class. So I think about you and your family alot--you are all in our hearts and prayers.

The next day he drove by again and HIS
CAR WAS STILL FULL OF PENGUINS.
"I thought I told you to take athem to the zoo!" I said.
"I did," he answered. "Today we're going to the beach."

  • Hi Simon!
It was such a joy to visit with you and your family in Oberlin two weeks ago. We're sending pictures to you from that time. It sounds like you've been handling the last few ups and downs with your usual good cheer. It was special to see all the love between you, Miriam and your mom, dad and grandma when we got to play together here in Schuyler's house. You are a brave and intelligent trouper! You taught us so much about what your treatment is like, especially when you told us about your Broviac site, which really does make you look like the superhero you are! We keep sending you our love and strength each and every day.

    Hugs to everyone,

Lawrie, " What do you want to tell him?"
Lexi, " I'm not sure yet 'cept it would be funner if Simon was on the magic carpet with us, then we would be 1,2,3 good skier kids. Maybe the magic carpet could make him not be sick"

Madi, Lexi and I drove to the mountains this morning to rent skis, ride the magic carpet (essentially a conveyor belt on a very gentle, gentle slope at the base of the mountain.)They skied and I walked, ran along with them. A good time was had by all and you were all in our thoughts.

We love you all and hold you in our prayers always.

  • Hey, Mary and Markus, it was so great to meet you both at the Ann Arbor Open School Open House earlier in the week. I love the way the universe brings together folks that need to be together! I just checked out your website. The photos of the hospital reminded me so much our time there. Although it can be so difficult, the love and support of all the staff there really eases things. Everyone was always so kind. And the funny thing is, we've been removed from it for almost two years now, and I hardly ever think of it. Ruby is better and the family has moved on and that is how it will be for you. Simon will go to K-garten and you'll be so busy with all that goes along with LIFE that this will become a distant memory. It will. If you have any questions about the open school, or our families experience with cancer, please contact me. I would love to bring your family a meal next time he's admitted, or better, from our experience, right when he comes out after chemo. We had so many meals brought by people we didn't even know, and that was so helpful. Or anything else. Please.

Love and prayers to your family from our family, Andrea, Jerry, Madeline (K, in Frans class), Alice and Ruby (a cancer survivor, herself!)

We known for sure that in January 2003 you will be ok, and at that time I wish you can visit us here in Brazil and you can play with me in the sand dunes that we have here. You are going to love.

If me, my mom or my dad can help in any away, please let us know!

One of my moms who did not realize you were sick, told me when she first met you she was hoping her little boy would be just like you. I thought that was pretty special. I noticed you were playing with the energy chime. I just love how the sound lingers and lingers after you tap it. It looked like Miriam enjoyed having you there too. I hope you can come back soon. • Hey there, Simon! Hi to Mary, Markus, and Miriam, too! I know it's important to keep going to the hospital for your chemo treatments, but it's probably nice to have a rest from that sometimes, too, huh? When my mom was getting cancer treatments and her doctors told her she'd have to wait a little while for her next one, she'd call us up and say happily, "I got a reprieve today!" Reprieve is a pretty big word, but it just means a temporary rest or a little time-out from something that's uncomfortable or unpleasant. Sometimes those few extra days of "reprieve" made it a lot easier for her to go back and start up her hard work again. I bet your trip to the zoo and to Oberlin and anything else fun you get to do while you're waiting will give you some super good feelings to carry over to those chemo times whenever they come again. So continue to enjoy your "reprieve!"

Here's a new joke from Danny (this one's a doctor joke, which seems appropriate!) -- Q: Why did the doctor lose her temper? A: Because she was short of patients! [Danny says: Get it? -- patients, like the people the doctor takes care of; and patience, like "you're trying my patience." Ha, ha!] Try that one on your doctors and nurses when you go back to the hospital -- it's sure to get a chuckle out of them, even if *they're* feeling short of patience that day!

Keep up the good work, Simon!

Love, Kris, Rob, Emily, Danny, and Laura

We are all thinking about you as you go back to the hospital today. I work in a hospital for kids kind of like your hospital. When I was in the elevator on Friday a young girl told me a good joke (you may have already heard this one) Why did the cookie go to the hospital. . .? because he felt crummy! We sure hope you don't feel crummy.
Can you feel all our long distance hugs, kisses. If you close your eyes can you remeber what it felt like when uncle Curt would throw you high up in the air?

We love you lots and we are holding you in our prayers.

I am a member of your Church and saw your Web site address in the Church Bulletin. It is a terrific site. I enjoyed seeing the pictures of you and your sister and reading your Mom's updates. Sounds like you will be starting treatment at Mott again today.
I also wanted to ask you if I can show your Web site to the Social work Students that I teach at the University. When they graduate, some on them will be working in hospitals like Mott and with other children who have cancer. Seeing your Web site may help them plan ways the children they work with can keep in touch with friends and family.
I hope this will be okay with you. If so, I will let you know what their comments are. I hope all goes well today and you get out as soon as planned.

P.S. Ask your mom to tell you how we used to wrap up "presents" to give to each other when we were little (do you remember that, Mary?)
