  • Dear Mary and Markus,

I was shocked to hear of Simon's death last week. I was away to Italy and then to Washington,DC, and finally California. Rebecca told me when I returned. I had no idea he was so critical! My thoughts and prayers are with you in your terrible loss. What a wonderful and dear spirit he was! Thanks for all of the stories and information on the web site. I send you all my love and embraces as you find your footing without your dear son.

I had dinner with the Colemans and your dad last night, and heard more stories from him. It was a good connection for all of us.

I won't be able to come to the memorial service but I will be there in spirit and I will try to call you this week so I can make at least verabl contact with you.

    Much, much love, Daune

  • Thank you for this hyacinth for my one soul. If I had nine, it would also feed them all. I really enjoyed Simon Says. What a delightful little perceptive, witty and bright philosopher. I wish I had had the opportunity to let him and Miriam empty all of my glitters and share my flipped-ed eggs and bunny noodles.
Know that I'm thinking of you all, Mary, Markus and Miriam each day. Through your loss, you and Simon have given many so much. What a tribute to Simon's life. Many hugs. Jean

  • Mary &amp Markus--

My aunt Jessie Reeder (Mary's former teacher, presumably voice, choir or Music Ed. in Oberlin) referred me to this website for Simon. Please accept my deepest sympathies and condolences on hearing of Simon's passing ten days ago. My years in A2 are often a maize and blue "blur", separated by some occasional memories amid the push to finish the degree (or else!!). I do remember you, Mary; my wife Dorinda and daughters Kelsey and Amanda are well. The girls are eleven and nine now, and Dorinda recently completed her first year of teaching after eleven years of being an at-home mom (what a shock!!). I teach at North Carolina Central University (Asst. Prof. of Music with varied liberal arts extras), and occasionally work with the NC Symphony Orchestra.

I'm sure you know by now that Jessie's son Terry died of leukemia in '98, so reading the surgery diary brought back quite a few memories of visits from A2 to Detroit to see him.

You and your family will be in my thoughts often as you celebrate the joy and deepened meaning of Simon's life.

Continued comfort, strength and best wishes to you and Markus.

    Tim Holley

  • Dear Mary, Markus, and Miriam,

Thank you for keeping us posted about your progress with Simon's memorial service. I am looking forward to it as a celebration of life, love, and family. What a triumphant spirit Simon showed us all! It is hard to know what to say - everything you have written has been so inspiring and yet tender, and so deeply heart-wrenching. Life must just seem surreal for your family right now. I am greatful that you are taking your time together as a family and giving yourselves space as you need it. Please know that we are thinking of you. Ashley says "hello" to Miriam.

  • Our family was in Boston this weekend, and I couldn't help but think about the Craig-Vodoseks while we were there. From the Museum of Science on Friday afternoon to the New England Aquarium this morning, I imagined Simon and Miriam exploring, wondering, thinking, laughing (especially at the sill Rock Hopper Penguins!), and most of all ENJOYING. We enjoyed, too; and I also enjoyed thinking of the four of you.

I hope you will find, as I did after losing my mom to cancer several years ago, that memories that may initially bring tears and an almost unbearable ache in your hearts will eventually, with the passage of time, bring smiles and even soul-cleansing laughter down the road. Because it's those memories that ensure that our loved ones really are always with us, even when we no longer inhabit the same world.

Miriam, I especially liked your way of thinking about Simon saying "hello" -- the recent meteor showers must have been absolutely chock full of "hellos" from him! We will think of him now every time we see a "shooting star." Thank you for that wonderful and comforting thought.

And actually it's got me wondering: do you suppose the twinkling stars are Simon and his new angle friends winking at us?? I'd like to think so!

    Thinking of you all,
    Kris, et al.

  • Mary and Markus, On a rainy Sunday afternoon, I sit at my computer and try to think of how in the world to say what can't be put into words. I will miss hearing about Simon and his sweet, funny ways and I will be sad to think of Miriam, going through life without her brother. But I will be encouraged to know that he was loved well and that he left behind a whole group of family and friends who will carry the essence of who he is to places he will never go.

Mary, I so appreciated your response on the Neuroblastoma Listserv to Shannen, who was struggling with missing her little Cierra. Your words to her were so perfect and loving and wise and I sat in awe at your wisdom and ability to express exactly what needed to be said. Thanks for sharing your words and heart with all of us those who stop by Simon's Place. We will continue to come by and check on you and your family and be grateful that our paths have crossed on this journey called cancer. Many blessings to you all.

They awaken us to understanding with the passing whisper of their wisdom...

  • Dear Mary and Markus,

Like many here, I'm sure, in the days since Simon's passing, I've shed lots of tears while reading your postings and friends' messages, and I've wondered how I might be able to help from so far away. These musings led me to the Alex's Lemonade site, where I found a simple way to provide some ongoing support to pediatric cancer: by buying Alex's Afternoon Blend coffee from independentroasters.com. With my order I told them about Simon’s passing and received a very nice note in return from Alex's Uncle Aaron, offering his sympathies. So long Starbucks! I’m hoping to turn Alex’s blend into a best seller in the metro-DC area!

You’ve done so much good by sharing your family's experiences and struggles. Simon's story will continue to help others - through his strength, courage and incredible spirit, and by raising awareness that will someday lead to a cure. I'd hoped to come to the memorial, but can’t make it happen. So I look forward instead to making a commitment to Simon's fund, once organized.

I have thought many times what Marta said in her recent post – that you were the best possible parents for Simon. To take it a step further, I think that only amazing people like yourselves could have created someone as extraordinary as your little boy.

    Jacqui

  • To Simon's family,
I am a first grade teacher at Uintah. Simon was a student in the room next to me. I'll always fondly remember having Simon during our first grade singing time. His face literally lite up when we were singing "Don't Cross the Street in the Middle of the Block" by They Might Be Giants. I adored watching Simon last year and was so impressed by his enthusiasm and sweet spirit. May the Lord be with you and give you the blessings you need to support you in this very challenging time. I truly believe you will see him again some day in the eternities.

  • Mary,

I don't know if you will remember me but I called you last year asking about Simon. Our children went to Uintah together. I have a 7 year old little girl her name is Bailie Erwin who in February will be 5 years out from her second Bone Marrow Transplant. She was diagnosed in June of '99 with Neuroblastoma stage 4. Your family is so strong!! When we heard that Simon had passed our family took a moment, said a prayer and have devoted the next couple of weeks to making sure that our family and friends remember how many little angels surround us everyday. You are forever in our hearts and prayers. Simon will be greatly missed.

    Lots of Love,

    Melanie, Bailie and Marcus Erwin

My heart weeps for your loss ~ the most unimaginable kind of loss in the world. I am so glad that you could all spend so much time together, throughout the whole process, and most especially during the past months. I am eternally grateful that you have the heart to share your story. You are blessed to have so many who have taken care of you in so many ways.

  • My heart is so full of sadness right now that I can hardly breathe. I remember the first day that Marley showed up at Wholesome Home. She was so taken with Simon. I had never even seen her show an interest in a boy; there was no curiosity before then. She was always surrounded by girls and my biggest concern about sending her to Linda's was that, at the time, most of the children were boys. I didn't think she'd survive the week in a house full of them. Simon had a gentle way with her. They were drawn to each other and became fast friends. Marley would come home every day and tell stories about Simon. "Simon climbed the tree," "Simon had a bug in his shirt," "Simon and I had 'ronis for lunch," "Simon read me a story"... He was smart and as patient a boy as I'd ever seen. Although she fit right in with all of the children, I believe that Simon helped Marley's transition into the "world" in an inexplicably significant way. They looked out for each other. Marley learned her first lessons about friendship from Simon. Simon was and will always be Marley's first friend. I'm proud to say so.

Markus and Mary, the strength that the two of you have possessed - from the moment you learned of Simon's disease - has always made me feel somewhat slack at the sight of myself. To have the courage to face the day-to-day struggles, to accept life "in the moment" as you have, is a trait that I do not possess. Most of us are never forced to determine whether or not we'd be able to withstand the heartache that has come with your experience, but my gut tells me that there are few people who could handle the life you've led the past few years with as much honesty, spirit, and solidarity as you all have shown. It is both beautiful and tragic, and so painfully complicated.
We will always remember Simon for his bravery and sensitivity to the world, for his curly hair and his smile.

All of our love to you and a thousand hugs for Miriam.

    Courtney and Marley

  • I am back home with Maggie in Salt Lake. August will finally be home a week from today. You all are never far from my thoughts as you continue to pass through this sacred time. I found this next piece earlier today. May your tears always flower.

The Inca's of Peru had an old expression
    The Flowering of my Tears

This represented the time of fulfillment which came after a long
    period of difficulty and sorrow.

Our tears continually water the Earth and finally, after we have
cried and cried, after we have let go of so much, after we have
passed through the searing fires of initiation and the dark night of
the soul, the flowers start to grow. These aren't just ordinary
flowers, they are precious, sacred flowers. Flowers that can only
grow after we have passed through a time of struggle and
transformation, a time of rebirthing into a new life.

    May your tears always flower,

    ~ Kathy Doore ~

  • Dear Miriam, Mary and Markus,

I was once told that our souls come to this world to learn...and perhaps to teach. And once a soul learns what it came to learn, it passes on again.

This has always given me great comfort because it means that Simon left us because it was his time to leave. He did what he needed to do and although we will never know what that was, he does and he is happy.

I don't know what Simon came to earth to learn, but I DO know what he taught the rest of us.

Through him and his joy and zest for life, he showed us how to live. Because of him, we have come to know a family that is truly extraordinary. A family that has shown the rest of us how to better appreciate a sunset, to value what we have, to love more deeply and fully and to find joy, peace and yes, even happiness, among the most difficult of life's lessons.

Thank you Miriam for being such a loving and wonderful sister.

Thank you Markus for being the father and husband who is a role model for all.

Thank you Mary for your honesty and willingness to share.

And thank you Simon for being you and for bringing us the wonderful family we know as the Vodoseks.

You will all continue to be in my prayers.

  • For the last few days, you all have been in our thoughts and those of numerous friends and colleagues at the Academy meeting in New Orleans. In countless conversations in the hotel lobby or outside a session or in the middle of Bourbon Street, friends of Simon were recounting what a remarkable, loveable, and courageous boy he was. He really touched so many lives!

Seeing the photo of the incredibly beautiful sunset from Red Butte Garden on the day Simon passed away, I now will always think about Simon everytime I see that stunning view over the Great Salt Lake.

Today Carter asked where Simon was since he had heard that Simon had died. After a few moments of thinking about it, Granger said "Simon knows where he is." What a profound answer for a six year old. Sometimes little kids seem to understand these things so well.

    Love,

  • In the rising of the sun and in its going down
    We remember them

When we are weary and in need of strength
    We remember them

When we are lost and sick at heart
    We remember them

When we have joys we yearn to share
    We remember them

So long as we live, they too shall live for they are now a part of us as
    We remember them

In the blowing of the wind and in the chill of winter
    We remember them

In the opening of buds and in the rebirth of Spring
    We remember them

In the blueness of the sky and in the warmth of the sun
    We remember them

In the rustling of leaves and in the beauty of Autumn
    We remember them

In the beginning of the year and when it ends
    We remember them

The above was received during the chaplaincy course that I am taking. You continue to be in my prayers as you adjust to a "new normal". God Bless You. ~ Sylvia

  • Dear Markus, Mary, and Miriam, I am saddened to hear of Simon's death. WHile his pain and suffering is over, his physical presence will be missed. I enjoyed my times caring for Simon at PCMC. He was fiesty and witty. I always knew there was an extra special intelligence and charm inside of him. I applaud your strength and courage to continue living the way Simon would have wanted you to. I expect that your family will certainly re-create something as lovely as you had when Simon was with you. You are loving and caring parents who have your children at the center of your universe. That in itself speaks volumes. We don't always see that around here. "Thank You" seems such a trite thing to say to a family who has enfolded so many people into their lives and into their love. You have given an amazing gift to so many by sharing your journey with your beloved Simon. We are reminded to cherish each moment of our lives, to always remember our power when we feel powerless, and to truly love each other. A quote from "FINAL GIFTS"... "Life is eternal, and love is immortal, and death is only a horizon, and a horizon is nothing save the limit of our sight." Go Captain Underpants, GO!

  • Heaven has a new super hero. Able to leap tall clouds in a single bounce, faster than a speeding rainbow, more powerful than a hurricane, it's Captain Underpants to the rescue!

To the Vodosek Family, may your days from here on out be filled with the bright and cheerful memories of Simon, and all the special times you spent with him on this earth. Although his time was short by our standards, the love you gave him is the love he gave back that is still there in your hearts and will see you all through this uneasy time. The pain does go away over time and is replaced by those great memories that come rushing in. Whether it's a song you hear on the radio, a movie you watch on TV, a place you drive past, or another child saying something that catches your ear, it's just Simon's way of letting you know that Captain Underpants is not far away at all.

God bless you all and give you the continued strength to help each other through this time.

    Sincerely,
    An Arizona Family

Liebe Mary, lieber Markus, liebe Miriam,

    Alles, alles Liebe
    Marfa

  • Like so many people, I have quietly visited this website frequently and hopefully throughout Simon’s journey, being inspired by Simon’s braveheart and his wisdom and praying for the restoration of his health and the maintenance of his strength and spirit. Through this inspiring Simon’s Place, I have witnessed your boundless love, strength and determination as parents and as a family, and I have marveled at and given thanks for the solid embrace of the constant love and support of your extended family and numerous friends. My heart is heavy with sorrow and aches with pain at the loss of Simon. Yet I smile at the thought of his spirit soaring high and free, released from earthly pain and restraint. By sharing Simon’s journey and your journey, Simon’s indomitable spirit and your love for him lives on in all of us. You remain in my thoughts and prayers. May God bless you and comfort you.

    All my love,

  • Dear Mary, Markus and Miriam, we met briefly at a wedding shower for Harris and Fraser, but our conversation impressed me and I have thought often about your family and Simon since then. I have checked in with his website from time to time and I've been truly inspired. I saw on the front page of the Tribune that Simon passed away and wanted to tell you -- this coming from someone who doesn't even know you -- that your son and your story are uplifting and full of love and hope for everyone. But I am aching for you that you've lost your beautiful little boy.

  • We were so saddened to hear of your loss. Your family has been in our thoughts and prayers for some time now. We have no words of wisdom of our own in a time that surpasses all understanding. But, we thought we would share quote from C.S. Lewis (who has provided some help to us at other difficult times)...
"We know not what we shall be; but we may be sure we shall be more not less than we were on earth. Our natural experiences (sensory, emotional, imaginitive) are only like the drawing, like pencilled lines on flat paper. If they vanish in the risen life, they will vanish only as pencil lines vanish from the real landscape, not as a candle flame that is put out but as a candle flame which becomes invisible because someone has pulled up the blind, thrown open the shutters, and let in the blaze of the risen sun."
(from "Transposition" The Weight of Glory)
Our prayers and thoughts will continue with you as your family now goes forward.
    Love,

I hope this paragraph will be of some comfort to Simon's extended family...Life is a festival on the way to freedom (Bonhoeffer). Death is a transition to another life. Yet I am not really gone. I am I and you are you in whatever we were to each other. Speak to me in the easy way which you always used. Put no difference into your tone...wear no forced air of solemnity nor sorrow. Laugh as we always laughed. Play, smile, think of me, pray for me. Let my name be spoken without affect. Life means all that it ever meant. • My mom told me about Simon today and I was very sad. Although I do not know what it is like to lose someone to cancer, I know what it is like to "lose" someone. My younger brother Kaleb drowned at the age of 2. Although he survived he suffered severe brain damage and is not the same little brother I once knew. He cannot walk, talk, eat or play like he use too. He is 7 years old now and we have cared for him in our home every since. It has been difficult for us to watch him go through his treatments as well. I love him so much and would not trade him for the world. My brother Kaleb loves Butterflies and I know that Simon did too. I would like to share this with you.~~ Taking a person through a grief, a loss, a significant change during which time they may be "cocooned" off from the rest of the world while trying to heal, only to emerge after time, changed, transformed, metamorphosed into a different person. (Thus is the story of the butterfly) We are all different people..thanks to Simon and Kaleb! You have touched our family in so many ways. You are in our hearts and prayers.
"See to it that you do not despise one of these little ones; for I say unto you, that in heaven their angels do always see the face of my father which is in heaven" (Matthew 18:10)

  • Yesterday afternoon, before I knew of Simon's passing I drove into Kerrytown. There were ample parking spaces in front of the co-op which is unusual and I noticed that is was unusually quiet in the co-op and then again in the Kerrytown stores. I met a woman who I seldom see, she was dressed in black and gave me an unusually long hug. When I left I was still aware of the quiet and still. When I arrived home and read the news I felt that Simon's spirit was in Ann Arbor and that all was still allowing his presence and wisdom. My heart is more still this morning as Simon's spirit takes wings into the next part of his journey. My love is also with those of you left behind. May the arms of love embrace you today and always in these most difficult hours. Gari

  • The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

    Psalm 23.

God be with you all - Erik and family

  • Tears are flowing freely here, as we know they are elsewhere. This little boy, with wisdom and courage beyond his years, touched so many people in his short life. We will all miss him.

But to those who knew him best, and will miss him the most, we send our deepest sympathy. You continue to be in our thoughts and prayers.

For reasons I didn't entirely understand at the time, last night when I visited this website I ended up looking at some of the oldest photos in the photo gallery. But now I'm thinking that by looking backward in time I may actually have been glimpsing Simon as he is now: with a full head of curls, that impish grin, and no outward evidence of disease -- running free, without his port, as Mary wrote. He will be missed here, but I trust that where he is now he is once again whole ... and wholly himself.

Bravo, Simon. Yours was a life very well lived. May we all learn from your fine example.

Wishing you all, day by day, a little more peace in your hearts,

    Kris and Family

P.S. The photo from the Exploratorium is a treasure -- thank you for sharing it.

Simon's illness and passing are so heartbreaking, but the memories of Simon's very full life are comforting. From our very first encounter, I have always been exceptionally impressed by your family -- your combined selflessness, values, strength, courage, and above all, resiliency. Observing your interactions as a family is truly inspiring, and I am so very fortunate to know you and to have known Simon. While I am deeply saddened that Simon is no longer with us here, I know that he remains with everyone whose life he ever lit up in our memories and our hearts and all of the lessons of courage and love Simon and each of you shared with us. There is a special place in my heart for all of you. Carla and I were both so blessed to know Simon. I know that we lost touch for some time, but I truly know that I bumped into Mary that afternoon on the street for a special reason; his name is Simon. I am always so thankful that he came back into our lives. For me, I will always remember Simon racing his new bike up and down the courtyard of family housing, slurpy and crunchy noodles from the Chinese restaurant, the excitement of building new playmobile and the fun we shared on the sculpture in front of the Art Museum. These were and will always be special memories for me. I pray for all of you and take comfort knowing that Simon is now looking over all of us.

  • Dear Mary, Marcus and Miriam:
I weep for you all and thank you so much for leaving us with the transcendent portrait of Simon. When I get home from work today, I will share the waterbug story with my son Jesse and then propose that we release the tadpole we've raised into a frog to be free. The day I read the waterbug story is the same day that we found the frog, for the first time, perched on a rock in the acquarium with his head above water as he made his transition from his first life to his second, breathing air instead of water. We always said we'd let him go when he became a frog but never knew when we would know what would be the right time. It will be a wonderful "teachable moment" with my son and mean that Simon will live on for all of us everytime we scan a stream for tadpoles or, as seems to be increasingly rare, see a live frog in the wild. With profound sorrow and thanks for the gifts you have bestowed on all of us in the Simon's Place community.

When I read your updates,I am reminded of a family member's final stage of cancer 8 years ago. How precious these days you have together truly are and how treasured those memories are to me. Sitting, cuddling, holding, praying, singing. One of the songs that I remember most, we sang softly:
    "Soon and very soon,
we are going to see the King.
    Soon and very soon,
we are going to see the King.
    Soon and very soon,
we are going to see the King.
    Alleluia, Alleluia,
we're going to see the King."

You all are held so near. I just spent two days at Harbin Hot Springs. Thought of Simon a lot while I was there. Today we saw an amazing orange dragonfly. I told my friends the waterbug story and talked about Simon for a while. After a couple minutes a second orange dragonfly joined the first and flew around the heart-shaped pool of warm water. It was all so beautiful. Every moment is a gift.
    Much love, Rachael

  • Dearest Friends,

I am staying at a beautiful lodge in Daniel's Canyon (fairly near Strawberry Reservoir) in the Uintah National Forest. I have stayed in my room, mostly, because I'm trying to write a wedding ceremony for my brother and his fiancée which I am to officiate in a little over a week. But from my windows...there stands indescribably beautiful nature. The lodge property, that only goes twenty yards or so from the buildings, is cursorily marked by a log fence. Beyond that is the woodland. Majestic lodge-pole pines, coarse underbrush, yellow wildflowers and the ubiquitous quaking aspens. I keep the window open so that I can hear their gentle sound. Last night I also listened to the sounds of fantastic downpour; it descended thunderously for a while on the roof of the lodge. When it abated somewhat, I heard the rain falling on the forest and the grasses. I went out on my little balcony and sat in a rocking chair (a privilege the mosquitoes make challenging, otherwise). I rocked for a bit and thought of those for whom I care.

You are all always in my thoughts. I check the website often (yes, unbelievably there is an internet connection here even though I’ve no cell phone coverage whatsoever). I hope for all of you to have comforting, enduring peace.

Out my window, there is a single, brand-new tree; a mere ball of tiny leaves atop a slender, fragile “trunk.” It grows quite solitary amidst the meadow grasses. To me it has, somehow, been an embodiment of Simon - perchance because it is a frail, lovely thing struggling to reach another place – I’m not sure. Whatever the case, I am certain that its delicate appearance belies its actual resilience. It survived last night’s downpour; I believe it has the fortitude to do whatsoever it must.

    Love and peace to you,
    Kate

I flew to California this morning. I'm staying in Santa Rosa with my girlfriend, her daughter, and new granddaughter. I haven't had sweet baby energy around me in so long. What a perfect vacation for me. On Saturday we will pick up Maggie from Camp Winnarainbow. This year she's learning to walk on stilts. She qualified to move from shorty stilts to tall stilts in just one day. They put on a big performance on the last day. All the kids show off the talents they've perfected over their two weeks at camp.

Sorry to hear about (((Alex))). May the four winds blow her safely home. My thoughts and prayers are with her family too. Thank you for letting us know, Mary.

  • Hi Simon! I was happy I was able to see you briefly during my trip to Salt Lake. You have a beautiful house! What a great play room you and Miriam share with all those windows.

I thought about you and your family all week during my trip. My prayers along with my family's have been with you, Miriam, Mary, Markus, and Grann.

A long time ago when I was in college, we sang this song. Your incredible strength is truely a sign that you are stilling singing to us.

    Yearnings by John Carter

Oh for a day to walk again, slow through a forest deep.
Oh for the time to talk again, before I go to sleep.
Oh for the warmth of summer sun, the chill of winter’s eve
And oh for a chance to sing my song, once more before I leave.

Oh for the scent of autumn air brisk and clean and cold
Oh the time to travel where the seas are blue and bold
Oh for the prayer I never prayed, the kiss I never kissed
And oh for a chance to sing my song, once more, while yet I’m missed.

Cry of bird and wail of wind,
    Word unspoken, sin un-sinned,
A night to dance, a hill to climb,
The chance to sing while there is time.

Oh for the taste of meat and ale to linger on my tongue.
Oh for the sight of hill and dale, and faces that are young.
    Oh for the hand of one I love, the time to bloom and grow;
And oh for the chance to sing my song, once more, before I go.

    God Bless.
    Kerianne and Bryan

  • Hi to Simon and family

Yesteday and today have been beautiful, beautiful days in Ann Arbor: sunny, cloudless, and just a little bit too warm--just too warm enough that you feel that Someone is trying to get your attention, but not so warm that you are unhappy about it. Just warm enough to feel energetic and hopeful.

As I drove along I felt that the sun was Simon's own energy and hope dispersing into the Universe, like he was putting it up there for us to use, because maybe he isn't going to use it himself for much longer.

So that on every sunny day forever we will look up at the sky and say "Hi Simon thanks for the smile."

    Peace from sunny Ann Arbor.

  • I am glad to learn that Simon remains relatively comfortable and that you all are able to enjoy resting together -- those hugs and cuddles must seem all the more precious now.

I also wanted you to know what Laura suggested the other day when I told her Simon's journey with cancer was coming to an end: "You know my friend Paul, who died in Kindergarten? Well he could maybe meet Simon in Heaven and show him around and stuff. Maybe they'll even get to be good friends!"

May Simon have as many (and more) friends in Heaven as he's cultivated here on Earth. And may those of us who are left behind find comfort in that thought....

Our prayers continue to be with you. You guys are amazing and such an inspiration for all of us. Love,

  • I love the Waterbug story. When I was 13 yrs old my best friend died of cancer and the minister who gave comfort to their family at Johns Hopkins sent it to me when Ann died. I continue to share the Waterbug story with my hospice patients.

They are there Simon, ones who have gone before you. They will greet you and show you around. Don't be afraid sweetheart. I'm praying for you on your journey. God Bless. xxxooo

  • Simon and family, I continue to sing and dance in celebration of your love and your life. Yesterday brought a Beatles medley. Yellow Submarine, Sgt. Peppers, Octopus' Garden, Let it Be, All You Need is Love, Here Comes the Sun &amp Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. Today you're getting mostly Grateful Dead related songs as it's Jerry Garcia's birthday today which begins what my friends and I refer to as "The Days Between". The Days Between end August 9th, the day Jerry died. For Deadheads these days tend to bring reflection on life and death and all that comes before, between &amp afterwards. This week the remaining members are on tour out East. Thousands of us will be actively participating in dance, love, celebration, and ritual that tap us into the Group Mind. I've been sharing You with my friends. I wanted to share them with you, too.

Love and blessings to all who come to this site and all who love Simon and his family.

Our prayers, love and support remain with you. Go now in peace and may the spirit of love always surround you. ~Rachael, Maggie and August

p.s. Maggie and August said Miriam might know them from Sunday School last year. They were two of the 4th and 5th graders that sometimes helped in her class.

  • Hello Simon and family. We have been praying for you for some time at the request of a couple other children, however today was the first day that I was able to access your site.

This site is probably one of the most creative that I have seen! Thank you for sharing it with us.

Simon, though you may not hear what I am saying to you, I hope your family will know that we will be storming heaven with prayer for you all. It's so difficult and sad to separate from each other, isn't it? But I believe that even though those that we love cannot be with us in the physical sense, that we are all still together, no matter what...carried in our hearts forever. And there are times when you just KNOW that the person we love is in our presence. God speed dear Simon.
Have a beautiful journey. Love, Sylvia

  • For Mary, Markus, Miriam and Dearest Simon,

"A Gaelic Blessing" has always been one of my favorites. Myriad versions, all of them lovely:

Deep peace of the running wave to you.
Deep peace of the flowing air to you.
Deep peace of the quiet earth to you.
Deep peace of the shining stars to you.
Deep peace of the gentle night to you.
Moon and stars pour their healing light on you.
Deep peace of the Light of the World to you.
Deep peace of love to you.

    Deep peace of love,
