The Book of the Serpent

Chapter One

In the beginning, there was darkness, and the cosmos was without form, and void.

And the Serpent were not pleased, and went to his brethren and said, "Noble companions, let us make a place of form and substance."

The Serpent's brother the Cyclops said, "No, Serpent. The cosmos is our playing field. We shall not mar it."

The Serpent's sister the Syren said, "No, Serpent. The cosmos is perfect as is. Changing it would be a grave error."

And the greater part of the Serpent's brethren agreed. But the Unicorn, who is very sly, did not agree, and went to the Serpent cloaked in darkness and said, "Brother, you are right. Let us go far from our brethren, and make a universe of form and substance."

They stole away in the Unicorn's cloak of darkness, and they went far from their brethren, until the Unicorn said, "This place is good." There the Serpent built the Logrus, a creation of perfect form and substance, which divided from each other Chaos and Abyss. The Serpent looked on this and found it good.

But the Serpent and the Unicorn were lonely in the new land, and the Serpent said, "Perhaps we should go and invite our brethren here, to see what we have made, and to compliment us on its beauty."

And the Unicorn said "No, brother, we should not do so; for they will be jealous, and destroy this land. Let me go into the Chaos and make companions for us." And she gave him a kiss and turned away, and went deep into the Chaos.

She was gone for many turns, and the Serpent was lonely, and feared for her death.

The Serpent then turned to the old ways of his brethren. He took the essence of the Unicorn that remained still with him, and breathed into it, and thus was born the Hind.

And the Serpent and the Hind braved the young winds of Chaos, and waited for the Unicorn to return. When the Serpent heard the Unicorn approach, he said, "Hind, hide in the cloak of darkness; I hear the Unicorn approaching, and I would have you surprise her."

The Hind hid in the cloak of darkness, and the Unicorn came forth from Chaos, bearing on her back the first creatures, from which all other creatures were born, and they were: a human, a demon, a beast, a fish, a fowl, a tree, a blade of grass, a snake and a spider.

"Here, brother, I have brought us company," said the Unicorn. And the Serpent was so delighted by these creatures that he forgot about the Hind hidden in the cloak of darkness.

The Serpent was so well pleased with the creations made from Chaos, that he studied them for some time, and so studying, fell into a deep sleep.

The Unicorn had studied also the creations made from Chaos, and she had decided in her arrogance that she could improve upon them. She called forth a particular favorite human of hers, and said, "Go you now to an island I see in the distance, that is very far from Chaos, and await me there. I have a task for you."

And the human fled over the bounds of dark and light and went to this island and waited.

The Unicorn knew that the Serpent's Logrus was the key to her plans; to enact her plan, she must take what he had created, and change it. And only the Serpent could truly see the Logrus; so the Unicorn lowered her horn towards the sleeping Serpent, and gouged out his right eye. And she fled over the bounds of dark and light, and went to the island where the human waited. She gave him the Eye of the Serpent, and said, "Do you look through this Eye and draw what you see there; what you draw will limit the power of the Chaos." And he did so.

The Hind had seen all of this, and was horrified; the Serpent lay near to death. The Hind snatched him from mortality, and took him to a sacred place to heal. But not before she took four drops of his essential fluids and gave them to the creatures of Chaos, as a promise that the Serpent would return to them in their hour of need, healed of his wounds.

Footnotes

playing field: translation from Geled to Thari may have been imperfect in this case. "Homeland" is also appropriate, with the connotation of a place where children are raised and nurtured.

cloak of darkness: thoroughly metaphorical, if the Unicorn and the Serpent were at this time without form and substance themselves, as speculated by Gregarus Divornan, circa PD 1034.

kiss .... essence: though the word does not indicate sexual congress, or another act of procreation, it is speculated that the word "essence" was originally "saliva". ie, the Serpent took what the Unicorn gave him with her "kiss" and created a new being from it.

sacred place: speculated to be Mt. Imnos

essential fluids: the Ancient of Four
