Knights of the Round Table

One of the things that almost always shows up in stories and movies about King Arthur is his Round Table; however, this is one of the things that is most probably made up entirely, or added into the Arthurian legend long after any real King Arthur would have lived. (There is an interesting theory about a mistranslation of the term "tabled rotunda" which I will get into later--look for a link from this page in the near future (dated 04/06/05).)

The theory was that Arthur had his knights sit at a round table so none of his knights would think that they were more important than any of the other knights, because there was no head or foot on a round table.

In different versions of the legend, there are 12, 24, 50, 250 and 1600 knights! There is no way to make a definitive list.

At the Great Hall in Winchester in England, there is a round table hanging on the wall at one end of the hall. This table actually dates from the Middle Ages, and was repainted many times since then. I will use the Winchester Round Table to list the knights.
