Michael Combi was educated in physics at the University of Toledo. After receiving his doctorate he was a Staff Scientist and Senior Staff Scientist at Atmospheric and Environmental Research, Inc. in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In 1989 he joined the faculty of the University of Michigan. His scientific contributions deal with the physics of the expanding atmospheres of comets as well as the interaction of planetary satellites with the local planetary magnetospheres.
