Wars of Beleriand

The Wars of Beleriand were the great conflics of the First Age between the forces of Morgoth and the Eldar and their allies, the Edain and the Dwarves, marked by six major battles.

War of the Dwarves and Orcs

The War of the Dwarves and Orcs was the fought from the Third Age 2793 to 2799 between the Orcs of the Misty Mountains and the Dwarves, especially Durin's Folk. The war was caused by the murder and mutilation of Thrór in 2790 by Orcs of Moria. After mustering their forces, in 2793 the Dwarves began sacking every Orc-hold they could find in the Misty Mountains, search for Azog, Thrór's murderer. In 2799, all the surviving Orcs gathered in Moria, and the Dwarves met them in the Battle of Azanulbizar. Most of the Orcs were Killed in this War, and this made the Misty Mountains safer for a century and a half, but many Dwarves were also slain. A large number of Orcs fled across Rohan and settled in the Ered Nimrais, but they were killed by 2864.

War of the Elves and Sauron

War fought from the Second Age 1693 to 1701 between the Eldar of Eregion and Lindon and Sauron and his allies. The War began after Celebrimbor discovered Sauron's treachery in the forging of the Rings of Power and Sauron decided to crush the now implacably hostile Elves. The Three Rings were hidden by the Eldar, but in 1697 Eregion was overrun and Celebrimbor slain. Elrond, who had been sent to Eregion by Gil-galad, fled with the remaining Noldor and founded Rivendell. In the next two years Sauron overran all of Eriador except for Rivendell. Gil-galad asked Tar-Minastir of Númenor for aid, and in 1700 the latter sent a navy to Middle-earth with whose aid Sauron was defeated. In 1701 he was driven out of Eriador and the War ended. Aside from greatly reducing the power and numbers of the Eldar, the War ended the only close link between the Elves and the Dwarves, the friendship between Khazad-dûm and Eregion.

War of the Great Jewels

The major phase of the Wars of Beleriand, fought between the Noldor, aided at times by the Sindar, Edain, Easterlings, and Dwarves, and the vast armies of Morgoth. The aim of the Noldor was to recover the Silmarils, while Morgoth desired to crush the hated Noldor and conquer Beleriand. The War began with Dagornuin-Giliath and ended with the intervention of the Valar and the overthrow of Morgoth in the Great Battle. It was also called the War of the Jewels.

War of the Ring

The War of the Ring is the great war fought at the end of the Third Age between Sauron and the Free Peoples, the subject of The Lord of the Rings. In the War, Sauron was overthrown for the final time and the One Ring destroyed.
