The Great Journey was the migration of the Eldar from Cuiviénen to Eldamar early in the First Age. The Journey took many years, for the Eldar, loving the beauty of Middle-earth, tarried frequently, despite the urging of Oromë and their chieftains, Ingwë, Finwë, Elwë, and Olwë . The Vanyar marched first, followed by the Noldor; the more numerous Teleri straggled behind. After passing around the northern end of the Sea of Helcar the Eldar turned west, and some abandoned the Journey. But most reached the Vales of Anduin after many years, and Oromë led the Vanyar and Noldor across the Misty Mountains. The Teleri hesitated, and many of them, known as the Nandor, went south down Anduin. Finally the remaining Eldar gathered in Beleriand, the Teleri as usual farthest east. The Vanyar and Noldor were floated to Eldamar by Ulmo on the island which later became Tol Eressëa. Later many of the Teleri, led by Olwë , also crOssëd on this island, which was then anchored in the Bay of Eldamar. Teleri remained in Beleriand, where they became known as the Sindar.
