Spring 2007: Munich, Germany

Day 1

The first day of our trip started with both Calc 2 from 8:30 to 10:00 and Organic Chemistry from 11:00 to 12:00. We then had to be back at Thieme House for our scheduled boarding time of 1:00.

Our bus pulls up to our building

We await the eventual arrival of our bus to the airport

We boarded the bus and drove to the airport and after going through security. We sat around for 3 hours playing cards, going to eat, and basically doing whatever to kill the time. Finally, they called our plane to start boarding. Unfortunately, we were flying Air France from Detroit to Paris, then jumping from Paris to Munich. The plane ride to Paris was fairly uneventful, though the plane had a camera on the bottom where you could watch the land that we were flying over. At the end of the flight they turned the camera forward so that we could see the dashed line that the pilot was aiming for on landing as well as the guy waving the little orange batons. It was cool. The monitors for this camera were mounted on the backs of the chairs in front of us and they had games and movies for the flight. The flight from Paris to Munich, however, was much less enjoyable. They had a smaller plane, so I spent the time working on my Orgo 2 Lab homework. Finally we arrived in Munich and took the S-bahn to our youth hostel.

When we came out of the S-bahn station, we saw a really interesting tree. It looked a lot like the Whomping Willow from Harry Potter.

We arrived at the Youth Hostel as it was getting near evening. Our room had a really nice view out of the window of some of Munich.

The next morning was a Sunday Morning and because of research done prior to our trip, we knew that there would be a Latin High Mass offered at the Theatinerkirche. This church was a baroque-renaissance style church, completely re-built after the war, and very, very white inside.

After the Theatinerkirche, we went to the Siemens Forum and toured their exibits. One of the most excentric ones was a rotating tower of chairs.

Another exibit that they had was the "Rote Baume" exhibit. We didn't exactly appreciate the artistry that went into creating this particular exhibit. Right next to it was an exhibi of "Variations of Four Lines".

After the Siemens Forum, we went on a tour of central Munich. Below is a photo of the old city hall.

The New City Hall is pictured below. Many people get these two city halls confused.

On our city walking tour, we walked through several buildings including the Hofbrauhaus. We then found the Imperial Residence.

Next to the Imperial Residence was the State Opera House.
