A few things about Matt . . .

As I've already said, I'm a PhD student in German and environmental history at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. As a native westerner (Californian, to be precise), I've been saddened by the abuse that we have heaped on our physical surroundings and on each other, hence my intellectual interests and hence much of the content of this homepage. This motivates the opinions, lines of argument and analyses that you will find here, and since I have had little inhibition about divulging them, here are some more things that I like and dislike:

  • I like jazz (like Wynton Marsalis, John Coltrane and Miles Davis) and 1970s progressive rock (like King Crimson, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Jethro Tull) and folksy/mellow songwriters like Joan Baez, Carole King, Joni Mitchell and James Taylor.
  • I like photography, biking and backpacking (but you can guess that from the rest of this homepage). I have tried to go on an extended bike tour at least once a year since 1993 (the inaugural adventure was Berkeley to Lake Tahoe, followed by Eugene, Oregon to San Francisco and Yosemite in 1994 and Seattle, Washington to Eugene in 1996; 1997's will be in either France or Germany).
  • I HATE television, except for the Simpsons, Doctor Who (but the recent revival on Fox sucked!), the Prisoner, and broadcasts of Golden State Warriors and UC Berkeley basketball games (UCB is my undergraduate alma mater).I have been known to dig the Weather Channel when really stoned, though.
  • I love beer, as long as its genuine microbrew (Samuel Adams et al. do not count, in spite of their claims to the contrary). My favorites are Anchor Steam Porter and Anchor Steam Liberty Ale (from San Francisco), Bell's Solsun Ale (from Kalamazoo, MI), Full Sail Amber Ale (from Oregon) and Red Tail Ale (from Hopland, CA). And of course, I must mention the handiwork of my two favorite homebrewers, John Slate and Jon Bauer.
  • Basketball is the greatest sport in the universe, while hockey and football are thinly veiled barbarity. Boxing is disgusting.
  • I like big dogs, especially well-behaved mutts. Small dogs annoy me, and I am as aloof to cats as they are to humans.
  • I have been a vegetarian since 1991. Even though I think it's the right thing to do, I can't become a vegan because I like cheesecake too much.

I think that's enough of my opinions for now. I may have a separate section on my political and social rantings sometime in the future. If you haven't already, please peruse the offerings here, particularly my photography (but please ask my permission if you want to use any of my images).
