Room 7: The physical environment

My favorite photographic subjects are landscapes, although I prefer the term "physical environment" to describe these scenes. As used in western cultures, "landscape" suggests a removal or estrangement from our physical surroundings in the form of a human/nature or human/environment dichotomy. However, we can never divorce ourselves completely from the physcial environment, although we can (and have) inflict great damage on it. Through my photographic practices, I hope to cultivate a more thoughtful awareness of our physical surroundings. Look for some of my other favorite landscapes in the rooms 1, 2 and 3.

San Antonio Creek, near Los Alamos, California, March 1995. I used to play here as a child, but there were more trees back then.

Sunset, Three Sisters Wilderness, Oregon, September 1993.

Mount Diablo State Park, near Walnut Creek, California, December 1993.

Sunset from my window, Eugene, Oregon, March 1994.

San Francisco from the Berkeley Hills, California, December 1993.

Mount Hood at sunset, from Parkdale, Oregon, June 1996.

El Capitan, Yosemite National Park, California, August 1994.

Oak leaf, Hoist Lakes Natural Area, Mio, Michigan, October 1995.

One of the most colorful landscapes I have ever seen. Foothills of Wind River Range, Wyoming, July 1995.

Ventana Wilderness, California, March 1993.
