Faculty Network Survey Winter 2000 - Summary of Results

I am happy to share with you, the results of the Faculty Network Survey distributed after last fall's ASHE conference. The first two pages of this survey are an "executive summary" of the twenty-five surveys that were returned (an 81% response rate). The tables that are attached will give you more detailed information on conference plans, teaching plans, course titles and content, and topics for future meetings and plans. If any errors or omissions are noted, please e-mail the corrected information to Sandy Tarbox at starbox@umich.edu.

Conference Plans
top

The majority (twenty) of the responding faculty are "Probable" or "Definite" about plans to attend the Fall ASHE conference. Only eleven are "Probable" or "Definite" about attending the AERA conference in New Orleans in April. Table A summarizes the responses to this question.

Teaching Plans

  • Fourteen faculty indicated plans to teach a course on Institutional Change and Transformation at some point during the year 2000 - eight during Winter/Spring, one in the Summer, six in the Fall. Table B summarizes who will be teaching each term.
  • Of the fourteen classes being taught in 2000, eleven have a Main Focus of Change and Transformation, and three focus on it as "Part of a Course."
  • Of the fourteen, seven have a content focus on "Higher Education Only", five focus on "Education Including Higher Education", and two focus on content that is "Broader with Higher Education Relevance."
  • Currently, only four have a web site, but six more indicate a web site is "planned." The remaining four indicate no current plans for a web site.
  • The majority are willing to share syllabi, texts or bibliographies, assignments and student course products.
  • Table summarizing all the responses on teaching plans and course content (Table B and Table C).

Table D: Detailed Faculty Response Regarding Future Activities
top

Proposals for Focus of Future Meetings

Activities Faculty would like to see happen and would be willing to coordinate or assist in developing.

Possibly a seminar on various approaches for teaching a course on Institutional Change (Bensimon)

Some aspect of a reading group with responsibilities for final proposal for the ASHE monograph or other publication. (Bonous-Hammarth)

Discuss possibilities of establishing long distance dialog, and reading groups to develop ASHE series monograph. Proposal or white papers on teaching/research issues in organizational transformation. (Bonous-Hammarth)

It's time to get an edited book going, especially in what theory and research contributes. (El-Khawas)

Continue discussion on ways to share resources etc. Discuss means to continue the development of bibliography. Discuss means to explore research projects across institutions. (Donaldson)

* See Focus of Meeting Ideas re: Products available on the web. (Graham)

Focus on specifics -- practical ways we can exchange detailed information

Would be willing to host a seminar or symposium at Stanford. (Gumport)

Bring and share information on useful readings, and ideas and insights that have been useful from theory. (El-Khawas)

Research collaboration. I have a newly formed study Center on Transformation and Leadership at GWU that would make a nice umbrella for the Collaborative research. The Center sponsors affiliates. (Kezar)

Share and see what others are doing particularly in teaching areas. Share case materials or problem based learning lessons. Greatest need is case study materials. Would also like to see products available on the web to share and use – a set of resources we all agree to share, especially ones that work and students research rated highly (or college or corporate training sessions). (Graham)

Activities related to comments on proposals. (Lick)

Discussion of teaching and research agendas, as well as funding opportunities for research. (Gumport)

Open to assignments to coordinate on behalf of the Network. (McLendon)

Discuss content and activities used in teaching. Current research on change, interesting cases, and anecdotes. (Hall)

Would be interested in assisting in the coordination of activities designed to assist faculty teaching and conducting research in this area. (Morphew)

Examination of the concept of, and knowledge about, the institutionalization of change- not resistance to change, but inability to get change to "stick". (Johnstone)

International Network (Sporn)

Research (Kezar)

Seminar, via technology, where Marv selects a speaker on the latest research and practice in organizational change in higher education. I would especially be interested in a 30 minute asynchronous video clip via e-mail (perhaps for one per month) form members of the network. (Winn)

Change and transformation in higher education. 1) What's happening? 2) What should be happening? 3) How can the Faculty Network assist/ impact change and transformation in higher education? (Lick)

Further discussion about creation of a "change and transformation" syllabi cache (electronic in nature?) and further discussion about development of case studies of change in higher education; perhaps opportunities exist collaboration among Network members. Possibly a second video conference. Possibity of a symposia at national meeting to communicate our efforts to a broader audience. (McLendon)

Course Assignments that help students to understand organizational change in higher education. Data for use in research on higher education. (Morphew)

Discussion of how institutional transformation of a college or university can be linked to substantial changes and improvements in the surrounding communities or the institution. (Rhoades)

Definition of Projects in: Finance and Privatization, Restructuring, Globalization (Sporn)

Hearing from colleagues about readings and topics of high interest to students. (Valverde)

Discussion of an analysis of differences and similarities of syllabi. (Winn)
