The goal of this course is to read ca 1500 lines from the works of Cicero and Catullus with competence and appreciation, to increase mastery of Latin morphology, syntax and vocabulary, to master advanced structures and reading skills, to develop sensitivity to word-order, meter and style and to gain insights into the influences of Greek culture on Rome.

Class- sessions will consist of pre-reading, close reading, sight-reading, speed-reading, analysis and discussion of passages with due attention to the cultural and historical context. Your ability to engage with the texts independently will be enhanced through two commentary projects, individual consultations, group discussions and reports. You will also become acquainted with the major reference tools and resources for the study of Latin available in print and electronic format.
