Jan Tschichold

April 2, 1902 - August 11, 1974

Typographer, book designer, teacher and writer.

Born in Leipzig Germany to the son of a sign painter, Jan Tschichold was trained in calligraphy. This set him apart from other noted typographers of the time since they were trained in architecture of the fine arts.
He wanted to be a fine arts painter but his parents saw that profession as unstable. He then decided to become a drawing teacher. After three years he decided he wanted to be a typeface designer and attended the Academy for Graphic Arts in Leipzig.
