Kinemages:
Kinemages (Kinetic Images) are used in protein structure classes, web sites, and journal articles for emphasizing certain aspects of protein structure. The Kinemage Home Page provides applications, utilities, databases, kinemage collections and tutorials for this protein structure rendering tool.
MAGE (software for rendering kinemages) is available for most platforms. Since the kinemage format is widely used, hundreds of kinemages can be found on the web. MAGE is also available as a java application, KiNG (Kinemages Next Generation). These applications can be downloaded from Kinemage downloads.
In case the Richardson Kinemage site is down, the Windows executable, MAGE, and the Java executable, KiNG, and the KiNG Manual (pdf) are available from this site.
The KiNG java application, as a default security setting, prohibits download of the kinemage files used to render the molecules. So, for those interested in obtaining the kinemages from this web site, the links below should start a download dialogue. If the download dialogue does not start and the file is rendered in the browser as text (first line @text), then the browser is rendering the file as text, rather than downloading the file. In this case, right click on the appropriate download link below and select the "save target as" option. (The file should be saved in the format xxxx.kin).
To facilitate on-line browsing, the discussion for each particular FGF species was designed with multiple KiNG applets. The downloads below contain all the individual applets for a particular molecule merged into a single kinemage package.
These kinemages were prepared on a 22" monitor operating at 1280 x 1024 resolution. Smaller screens and lower resolutions may have difficulty visualizing within MAGE all of the menu items in the more extensive kinemages (1CVS, 1E0O, 1EV2, 1EVT, 1G82, and 1NUN; 1FQ9 has far too many menu items for MAGE). If this is the case, try KiNG (requires Java Runtime Environment) since it has a scrollable menu option to compensate for numerous right pane menu items.
The real-time visualization using KiNG of the structures on this site requires a java-enabled (JRE from Java) browser.
Many browsers have disabled Java (to protect users). The files below can be downloaded and run on local machines that have installed the Java runtimes.
