More info on NURS 356 - Medsurg
Hi everyone!  I hope you have a very restful break.  I wanted to give you an update on N356.  I hope that you will check out the coursetools sites.  Everything you need, you will find there.  There is a paper coursepack for this course this year, but you don't have to purchase it.  The information needed for the classroom part of N356 can be found on the 001 section of coursetools.  The paper syllabus is approximately 350 pages and contains all of the powerpoint lecture slides, drug sheets, case studies, class objectives and basic clinical tools.  All of this can also be found on the 001 section of coursetools.  You may choose if you prefer to print it yourself or buy it already printed.  The clinical information is found on the N356 002 site.  This is for everyone, not just section 002.  You may have to go to browse sites to find this one.  Try that if it doesn't show up under "My courses".  For the classroom information, don't try to print the entire thing.  Just go class by class or week by week.  There will be some changes and additions to the site throughout the semester.

The first day of class will be Wed 1/7 from 1-3 in the NIB auditorium.  Class will have the following schedule:

1:10-1:40 - Medication calculations exam.  Bring your pencil and calculator and be ready to take the exam.  You must score 90% to pass.

1:45-2:00 - Introductions of the clinical faculty and an short overview of the course.

2:00-2:20 - OR coordinators here to talk to you about your OR experience.

2:25-3:00 - You will be watching the OR video which is required for you.  The medication calculations exam will cover IV's, injectable, and po meds, and equivalents.

The only required textbook is the NCLEX-RN comprehensive review by Silvestri.  If you already have an NCLEX review book, you don't have to buy another. The Smeltzer Med-surg text will be used as a reference this semester.

There have been some personel and unit changes over the summer.  So here is the latest information on clinicals which start on either Thursday 1/8, Monday 1/12 or Tuesday 1/13. All clinical will be held during the day shift.  The instructors decided not to have preclinical the night before, but will require you to come to clinical on your assigned day earlier than the start of the shift.  Each instructor will give you this information.
